A Rolls-Royce Dawn 2022 is not the car you book for a full week of errands. It is the car you book for one evening: a proposal on the Palm, an anniversary dinner, a sunset run down the coast with the roof folded away. The V12, and how it drives

Under the long bonnet sits a 6.6-litre twin-turbo V12 making 563 hp and 820 Nm, sent through an eight-speed automatic to the rear wheels only. That is the detail that separates the Dawn from its stablemates here: the Ghost and Cullinan both put power through all four wheels, while the Dawn is rear-wheel drive, in the old Rolls-Royce tradition of a car that pushes rather than pulls. It still gets to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds without any drama, and the eight-speed box works so quietly you register the gear change by the sound of the exhaust dipping, not by any shove through the seat.

On Sheikh Zayed Road it does what every big Rolls does, gathering speed with no real sense of effort and staying planted well past a normal cruise. It is long, close to 5.3 metres nose to tail, though no wider across the body than a Ghost, and the low roofline means you see over less car than you would in a Cullinan. Reverse cameras and sensors carry the weight of the parking in a tight Marina or mall ramp. Being a two-door, you need a proper gap alongside to swing the doors, so give yourself a wider bay than the length alone suggests.

Four seats, a small boot, and what that means

The Dawn seats four, not five, and the back two seats are for a short hop rather than a real journey. Two adults up front live in typical Rolls-Royce comfort, wide seats and acres of legroom. Put two more in the back for the drive from dinner to a nightclub and they will not complain, but do not plan on carrying four adults across town for an hour with the roof down and expect anyone to arrive fresh.

The boot holds 295 litres with the roof up, which takes a couple of soft bags or a small case, and it shrinks further once the fabric top folds away and needs somewhere to sit. This is not the car for an airport run with a family's luggage. If your day includes suitcases, take the Ghost, or bring a second car for the bags and use the Dawn purely for the drive itself.

Running cost, heat and the cabin, soft top up or down

The 82-litre tank takes premium fuel and the V12 uses about 14 litres of it per 100 km, so a week of driving this daily adds up fast. Most renters book the Dawn for a day or two rather than a full week, which keeps the fuel bill in proportion to what the car is actually for.

Heat decides when the roof makes sense. Roof up, the cabin cools the way any well-sealed coupe does, and you can climb back in after a long park without much of a wait once the AC has had a minute to work. Roof down is a different story in a Dubai summer. Midday sun at 45 degrees turns an open cabin into hard work regardless of how good the car is, so save the top-down drive for early morning, dusk or a cooler winter evening rather than the middle of an August afternoon. The fabric roof itself is quick either way, folding away or coming back up in about 20 seconds and able to do it while you are moving at up to 50 km/h, so you can drop it at a red light rather than pulling over.

Salik tolls on any journey you take are yours to cover, and RTA fines during the rental pass to you as the renter. Seat belts are required in every seat and a child under four needs a proper child seat, even for a short drive in a car like this. Given the value of the car, a refundable deposit applies rather than a no-deposit option, and you will need to be 25 to take the keys, older than the age we ask for on the Ghost or Cullinan.

Who this is for, and when it makes sense

Book the Dawn for the moment, not the week: a proposal, an anniversary, a birthday drive, the one evening on a trip when you want the roof down and a V12 doing the work. The 250-kilometre daily allowance covers that kind of driving easily, with extra distance charged at AED 0.5 per kilometre if the day runs long.

Skip it if your trip needs a car for daily use, airport transfers with real luggage, or four adults travelling together for more than a short hop. The Ghost drives just as well, carries more in the boot and seats five properly. The Cullinan does the arrival and the presence better if that is the job.
