The Renault Koleos 2023 is built for the kind of week most Dubai renters actually have: a high seat, a quiet cabin, and enough clearance to shrug off speed bumps and mall ramps that make a low sedan wince. We bring it to your door, and what you get is a comfortable midsize SUV that does family errands and long coast runs without asking much of you. It's a five-seater tuned for calm rather than corners, and that single trait decides who should book it. For two or three people, their bags, and a relaxed pace around the city and out to the beach, it fits well. For pace or a third row, it doesn't, and we'll be straight about that below.
Start with the part that makes daily Dubai driving easier. The Koleos sits 210 mm off the ground, so the speed bumps, raised pedestrian crossings and steep mall ramps that scrape a low car are simply non-events. You drive over the city's lumps without thinking about them. The high seating position also gives you a clear view over traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road, which takes some of the stress out of a busy commute.
This is a road SUV, not an off-roader. The clearance and the suspension are there for comfort and confidence on tarmac and the odd patch of light gravel or beach access, not for soft sand. For dune driving you'd want a proper 4x4. For everything a normal Dubai week throws up, the Koleos is well within its depth.

This is where the Koleos earns its place. The 493-litre boot takes two large suitcases and a couple of soft bags with room left over, which is more than most compact crossovers manage and enough for a full DXB or DWC airport collection. Fold the rear bench and you open up around 1,707 litres of flat load space for a mall haul or sports kit.
Up front, two adults get a wide, airy cabin, and the back bench has genuine legroom rather than the token kind, so three across works for shorter trips. The honest limit is the seat count: it's a strict five-seater. If you're a family of six or you need a third row for visiting relatives, size up to a seven-seater like a Kia Sorento. For five and their luggage, few cars in this rental bracket feel as unhurried.
The 2.5-litre four makes 171 hp through a CVT to the front wheels, and it's tuned for smoothness rather than urgency. Around town it's quiet and easy, and on the motorway it settles into a relaxed 120 km/h cruise that makes long airport runs pass without fatigue. Ask for a quick overtake, though, and the CVT lets the revs rise while the car gathers speed in its own time. That suits steady cruising. If you regularly want to dart through gaps on the E11, a turbocharged rival like the Hyundai Tucson will feel sharper.
On fuel, Renault quotes around 8.1 litres per 100 km combined, and in Dubai's crawling traffic with the AC working hard you should plan for a little more. With the 60-litre tank, a normal week of city driving and a couple of longer runs means filling up roughly once. The included 250 km a day covers typical city use comfortably, with extra distance charged at a modest rate if you head out of town.
Summer is the real test, and a Koleos that's baked in a mall lot at 45 degrees is an oven for the first minute, like any car here. The AC pulls the large cabin down to comfortable within a few minutes once you're moving, and rear passengers get their own vents at the back of the centre console, which matters with people in the second row on an hour-long run. The big glass area lets in plenty of light, so park in shade when you can and the cabin starts cooler. For a family car in this climate, those rear vents make it a better pick than smaller crossovers that only chill the front.
Two local points sit with you as the renter. Salik tolls are charged to your rental as you pass the gantries, and any RTA fine during the hire passes to you. Children under four need a child seat, which we can fit on request.
Rent the Koleos if you want a calm, spacious five-seat SUV for family duties, airport pickups and easy motorway miles, and you value comfort and a high view over outright speed. It's sensible value against the pricier midsize crossovers, and the clearance makes Dubai's bumps and ramps a non-issue.
Skip it if you want a car that feels quick or eager, where the turbocharged Tucson or a Mazda CX-5 will reward you more, or if you genuinely need seven seats, in which case go straight to a larger SUV. For most renters who just want room, quiet and a relaxed week, the Koleos is the comfortable choice.
