Renault Duster 2022 - start from 135 AED / day

The Renault Duster 2022 is the version of this little SUV that finally has the engine to match its tough looks, and we rent it in Dubai from age 18 when most of the market won't talk to you until 21. Earlier Dusters paired the high body and all-wheel drive with a modest motor that felt slow on the highway. This one runs a 2.0-litre making 143 hp, so you get the same 210 mm of clearance and the same AWD grip without the wheezing merge onto Sheikh Zayed Road. Our argument is straightforward: if you want a cheap, tall, go-most-places SUV that doesn't feel out of its depth at 120, the 2022 Duster is the one to book. It's still basic inside, and we'll be honest about that.

The bigger engine is the whole point this year

The 2.0-litre four pulls 143 hp and gets the Duster to 100 in around 10.9 seconds, with a top speed of 182 km/h. Those aren't sports-car numbers, but they change the character of the car completely. Where a smaller-engined Duster makes you plan every overtake, this one merges and passes on the E11 without drama. You squeeze the throttle, it responds, and you slot into the gap. For a week of mixed city and highway running, that extra muscle is what stops the car feeling like a penalty for choosing budget.

The automatic gearbox keeps things simple in stop-start traffic, and the all-wheel-drive system sends grip where it's needed on loose surfaces. You'll feel the benefit on a sandy access road, a graded track toward Hatta, or a wet ramp after a rare downpour.

What the height and AWD actually get you

The clearance is the second reason people pick a Duster. At 210 mm it rides over Dubai's speed bumps, the steep lips on mall entrances, and rough kerbs without the wince you get in a low sedan. You sit high, you see over traffic, and the car shrugs off surfaces that would have a hatchback scraping.

Be realistic about the off-road limit, though. This is a light SUV with AWD, not a low-range dune basher. Compacted tracks, beach access roads and graded paths are well within reach. For soft sand and serious recovery situations you want a proper body-on-frame 4x4. The Duster covers the in-between, which is where most weekend plans actually land.

Fuel, and how often you'll fill up

The 2.0-litre drinks a little more than the smaller Duster engines, but it's still cheap to keep moving. Combined consumption sits around 8 litres per 100 km, and even with Dubai heat and the AC working hard, the 50-litre tank stretches across most of a week of city driving. Most renters fill once and only think about fuel before a longer run out of town. Petrol here is inexpensive, so the bigger engine costs you very little in practice for the pace it adds.

Space, boot and the cabin

Five seats, with honest room for the class. Two adults up front are comfortable and the back takes three kids or two adults for shorter trips. The boot holds 428 litres with the seats up, which is enough for two large cases plus soft bags on a DXB or DWC airport pickup. Fold the rear bench and you open a long 1720-litre load space for bulkier kit or a flat-pack run.

Inside, the Duster is plain. Hard plastics, simple switchgear, none of the screens or soft surfaces you'd find a couple of price brackets up. That's the trade you accept for the rate. If a premium cabin matters to you, this isn't your car.

Heat, AC and the costs that fall to you

From May through September the cabin bakes when parked, like everything in Dubai, so what counts is recovery. Once you're moving, the front vents pull the temperature down within a few minutes rather than fighting it the whole trip. It's a budget SUV, so don't expect rear vents or climate luxury, but for the cabin size the cooling copes. Park in shade where you can and the first minute is far kinder.

A couple of Dubai practicalities sit with you. Salik tolls are charged as you pass the gantries, and any RTA fines during the rental pass to the renter. A child seat is mandatory for under-fours, which we can fit on request.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the Duster 2022 if you want real ground clearance and AWD grip on a budget, but you also want enough engine to feel relaxed on the highway. The 2.0-litre is what separates this year from the cheaper, slower Dusters, and for younger drivers the rent-from-18 option makes the whole group eligible.

Look elsewhere if interior quality is high on your list, since the cabin stays firmly budget. Pick a proper 4x4 if soft sand and dune driving are the plan, not the occasional graded track. But for a renter who wants a tough, tall SUV that can stray off the tarmac and still hold its own at 120, this Duster earns its keep.
