Renault isn't the first badge most renters search for in Dubai, and that's worked in the Renault Duster 2020's favor: it rents for less than crossovers with a fraction of its ground clearance. This is a 2.0 litre, all wheel drive SUV with roughly 205mm of clearance, enough to clear a rutted Hatta track or a steep mall ramp without flinching, not a jacked up hatchback wearing SUV badging. Five seats, a five door body, and an automatic gearbox round out the basics. The case for it is straightforward: if you can live with a plain cabin and an old four speed auto, the Duster 2020 gets you real capability that pricier economy SUVs still don't match.
The UAE spec Duster 2020 comes with a 2.0 litre four cylinder making 135 hp and 195 Nm, paired with a four speed automatic and an all wheel drive system. That AWD setup isn't full time. It runs front wheel drive for most normal driving and sends power to the rear axle when the fronts start to slip, with a lock mode for loose gravel or sand at low speed. It's not a Wrangler and nobody should treat it like one, but it's a genuine step up from the front drive only crossovers that share this price bracket.
The gearbox is the part that shows its age. Four ratios is a decade behind most rivals, so the engine spins higher than it needs to once you're settled into a Sheikh Zayed Road cruise, and the cabin gets louder for it. Acceleration is unhurried rather than quick, so treat the Duster as a car for steady progress, not for punching gaps in fast traffic. Around town, and on Hatta's graded tracks where you're rarely above 80, none of this matters much. It's the long highway stretches where the old gearbox reminds you what it is.

At 4.34 metres long and 1.8 wide, the Duster stays easy to place in tight parking. It drops into a mall multi storey bay or a tower's basement spot without the extra shuffling a bigger 4x4 needs, and U-turns don't turn into three point manoeuvres.
The boot holds 414 litres with the rear seats up, enough for one large suitcase and a couple of soft bags on an airport run, not much more. Up front, two adults sit comfortably with a higher seating position than a hatchback gives you. The back bench works for two adults, or three kids across for the school run. Put a fourth adult back there along with a full boot and it gets tight fast, which is the honest limit of a compact SUV at this price.
Renault rates the 2.0 litre Duster at around 12.8 km per litre combined, and the 50 litre tank should get you close to 600km on paper. Dubai traffic and an AC running flat out in summer will eat into that. Expect closer to 9 or 10 litres per 100km in real city driving, which still leaves a comfortable week between fills for most renters.
We deliver the Duster to your door within one to two hours of booking, and the rental terms are simple: 250km a day, with anything past that billed at AED 0.5 per kilometre, so keep an eye on the odometer if you're planning a long Hatta run. You'll need to be 25 to take the keys. Salik tolls and any RTA fines land on the renter, same as with every car in the fleet.
The cabin is compact, so the AC doesn't have much air to fight once you climb back in from a hot parking lot, and it pulls the temperature down to something bearable within a few minutes. Don't expect anything plush inside otherwise. The plastics are hard and the switchgear is basic, with no attempt at luxury trim. It's built for use rather than for showing off, and for a week of running errands that's a fair trade.
Rent the Duster 2020 if you want an SUV that can leave the paved road occasionally without paying crossover money for the privilege. A week of city errands followed by a weekend out to Hatta or a firm desert track is exactly what it's built for, and few economy rentals in Dubai can follow it off the tarmac.
Size up if you need to move four adults with a full set of airport luggage on a regular basis, or if you spend most of your time overtaking on the highway. The back seat and the four speed auto both run out of room in those situations, and a Kicks or a Creta will feel smoother and quicker for the same money. Renault's badge might not be the first one that comes to mind in Dubai, but underneath it this is a proper light 4x4, and for the renter who actually wants to use that, it's worth looking past the name.
