The folding top is the headline feature, with a caveat worth saying plainly. From late spring through summer, roof-down driving is for early morning and after dark, not the middle of the day. At noon in July the sun is brutal and a black cabin bakes within minutes. Run the roof down at dawn along the coast or after sunset, and put it up before the heat builds.

With the roof up, the small sealed cabin is actually an advantage. There's so little air inside that the AC pulls it down quickly once you're moving, faster than a big SUV recovers from the same parked heat. The first minute is unpleasant, as it is in any car here, then it settles. Front vents are strong; there are no rear vents because there's no rear.

The low nose needs respect. With 131 mm of clearance and a long front overhang, steep mall ramps and the sharper speed bumps want a slow, angled approach so the lip doesn't scrape. Parking is otherwise easy given the compact footprint. One more thing to keep straight: Salik tolls and any RTA fines during your rental, speed cameras included, are yours to settle, and enforcement here is heavy.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the 2024 Boxster if you've made peace with two seats and a weekend's worth of soft bags, and what you want is the drive: a coast road at sunrise, a run out to Jebel Jais, a roof-down evening once the heat drops. For that brief, it's superb and it's hard to find better near the price.
