Why the base Carrera is enough car

There's a reflex to size up to a 4S or a Turbo because the numbers look better on paper. On a road you can actually use, the base Carrera's 379 hp through the rear wheels is already more performance than Dubai's limits let you spend. It hits the kind of pace where you're checking the speed cameras well before you've run out of engine. The flat-six sound is there, the steering is the same talkative Porsche rack, and the eight-speed PDK shifts just as cleanly as it does in the pricier cars.

Rear-wheel drive is the one real difference worth thinking about. The 4S sends power to all four wheels and feels more planted when you're greedy out of a wet roundabout. The base car is purer and lighter in feel, but it asks for a slightly smoother right foot, especially after one of Dubai's short, sharp summer downpours leaves the tarmac slick. If you've driven a fast rear-drive car before, you'll love it. If a 911 is brand new to you and the idea of managing the rear makes you tense, that's the honest case for spending more on the 4S.

Fuel, range and how often you'll stop

The 64-litre tank and a combined figure around 9 L/100km look generous, and they are if you drive like a tourist. Nobody rents a 911 to drive like a tourist.
