The first thing we point out when we hand over a Peugeot 2008 2025 in Dubai is the steering wheel. Salik tolls come out of your account as you cross the gantries, and if your commute crosses Sheikh Zayed Road twice a day they add up faster than the petrol does. Any RTA fine during the rental is passed on to you. Your rate includes 300 km a day, which is generous for city use, and anything past that is AED 0.5 per kilometre.

Luggage, back seats and getting it parked

The boot is the quiet strength here. At 434 litres it's a good deal bigger than most of the cheap crossovers we rent, and it genuinely takes two large hard cases plus a soft bag, which is the difference between a comfortable DXB pickup and a suitcase riding on someone's lap. Drop the rear bench and you have enough for a flat-pack run or a full week of shopping.

The back seat is a different story. Two adults sit fine behind two adults, but the 2605 mm wheelbase is short and a third person across the middle is a short-hop arrangement, not a comfortable one. Kids are no problem at all.

Parking is easy. At 4.3 metres it slots into the narrow bays in older Marina towers without a shuffle, and the light steering and small wheel make U-turns and multi-storey ramps quick work. One honest caveat on the SUV badge: the 2008 sits on a supermini platform, so its height advantage over an ordinary hatchback is modest. Steep ramp lips and the aggressive residential speed bumps still want a slow, square approach rather than a confident one. If you want real clearance, this isn't the car for it.

Heat, cooling and how it drives

Cabin volume is small, which works in your favour from May onwards. Left in the sun the interior gets as unpleasant as anything else here, but once you're moving the front vents pull it down to bearable within a couple of minutes. Rear passengers are fed mostly by airflow pushed back from the front, so on a midday drive the back settles a little slower than the front. Start the AC and let it run for a minute before you load kids in, and park in shade when you can. That advice applies to every car in this class, but a dark cabin in July makes it worth repeating.

On the road the 2008 is relaxed rather than quick. With 115 hp and no turbo, it climbs to 100 km/h without complaint but wants a bit of planning before an overtake, and asking for a sudden burst at 120 makes the engine work audibly. What you get back is ride quality. Peugeot has always been good at this, and the 2008 rounds off the joints and patched sections on the E11 better than several rivals with stiffer setups. For a week of driving where most of your time is spent sitting in traffic, that comfort matters more than a faster 0 to 100.

Who should rent it, and who should pick something else

Rent the Peugeot 2008 2025 if you want the cheapest crossover to run for a week of city driving with a boot that copes with real luggage. A couple, a solo driver or a small family gets the most out of it. Our minimum age is 18 rather than the 21 most Dubai desks insist on, which makes it a realistic pick for younger drivers who normally get turned away at this class.

Look elsewhere in three cases. If you want performance, the turbocharged Geely Coolray and Haval Jolion both pull harder and feel stronger on the highway. If you regularly carry four adults on long runs, the rear bench and the modest power both start to strain, and a mid-size crossover or a sedan is the better call. And if you sit tall and the i-Cockpit display disappears behind the wheel when you get in, tell the driver at handover and take an MG ZS or a Nissan Kicks instead. It's a layout people either stop noticing after ten minutes or never quite settle into, and a week is too long to spend fighting it.
