Peugeot 2008 2023 - start from 137 AED / day

Want a small crossover that doesn't look like everyone else's, we hand over the Peugeot 2008 2023 across Dubai with 250 km a day built into every rental, so a week of Marina-to-Downtown errands won't have you watching the odometer. This is the French take on a subcompact SUV: a sharp-edged body, a raised driving position, and a cabin that feels nothing like the Japanese and Korean default in this class. The catch is that same cabin. The tiny steering wheel and the high digital dash are love-it-or-hate-it, the boot is modest, and that decides whether the 2008 is right for you or whether you should size up. This page is here to settle that.

What you're actually renting

The 2008 is a five-seat economy crossover with a 1.2-litre turbo three-cylinder making 150 hp through an eight-speed automatic, front-wheel drive. It hits 100 km/h in about 8.7 seconds, which is brisk for the class and more than enough for merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road. The numbers below come from the spec sheet; what they mean for your week is in the prose.

The cabin is the reason to rent it, and the reason to think twice

Peugeot calls it the i-Cockpit, and you'll know within thirty seconds whether it works for you. The steering wheel is unusually small, and you read the digital instruments over the top of it rather than through it. Set your seat right and it feels quick and modern, with a genuinely good view out. Set it wrong and the wheel rim clips the top of the dash display, which is the single most common complaint owners have. Tall drivers in particular should take a minute to sort the seat and wheel before pulling away.

What you get in return is a cabin that feels several notches above the rental norm. The design is angular and a bit theatrical, the materials are better than the price suggests, and after a week most people stop noticing the small wheel and start liking it. If you want a car that feels like a choice rather than a default, this is it.

Boot space: be honest before you book

The 434-litre boot is fine, not generous. Two of you with a couple of medium cases and soft bags will load it without drama. Try to fit two large hard cases plus airport carry-ons and a buggy and it gets tight fast. For a solo driver or a couple it's the right amount of space. For a family of four heading to DXB with a week's luggage, you'll be folding a rear seat or wishing you'd taken something bigger. Fold the seats and you free up real room for flat-pack runs or a bike, but with all five seats in use, treat this as a two-person luggage car.

The back seat itself is usable for adults on short hops and good for kids, though three across is a squeeze for grown-ups.

Parking, ramps and Dubai speed bumps

At just over 4.3 metres long, the 2008 is easy to place. Marina towers, mall multi-storeys, tight valet bays, the kind of U-turn that makes a bigger SUV a three-point affair, none of it is a problem here. The light steering and the high seating make it one of the easier cars to thread through a packed Dubai Mall car park on a Saturday.

Ground clearance is around 170 mm, which clears the aggressive speed bumps in residential communities and the steeper mall ramps without scraping. This is a road crossover, though, not an off-roader. It rides higher than a hatchback and that's the point: a commanding view and easy kerb access, not desert tracks. Keep it on tarmac.

Heat, AC and the summer reality

A Dubai summer is the real test of any rental, and the 2008 handles it reasonably for its size. The cabin is compact, so once the AC is running it cools quickly, and the front vents pump out cold air with proper force. After the car has baked in a 45-degree car park, give it a few minutes with the fan high before it's genuinely comfortable, the same as anything else here. There are no rear vents to speak of, so back-seat passengers in peak summer feel the heat a little more than those up front. For two people it's a non-issue. With kids in the back on a long July afternoon, factor that in.

On the road and at the pump

The 150 hp turbo three-cylinder is the strong point. It's eager off the line, the eight-speed auto is smooth, and overtaking on the E11 is easy at city and legal-highway speeds. Push it to a sustained high cruise and it stays composed, more so than the cheaper city cars in the rental fleet. It's a comfortable Sheikh Zayed Road companion rather than a straining one.

Peugeot quotes around 5.5 l/100km combined, but that's a lab figure. In real Dubai driving, AC blasting and stop-start traffic, expect closer to 7. From the 44-litre tank that still gives you well over 500 km of mixed driving, so on a normal week of city errands and the odd airport run you're looking at one fill, maybe two. The DXB and DWC hops are short and undemanding for it.

A couple of operating notes that catch renters out: Salik toll gates are charged to you, and any RTA speed or parking fines during the rental pass to the renter too, so watch the limits. Seatbelts are mandatory in every seat.

Who should rent the Peugeot 2008, and who shouldn't

Rent it if you're a solo driver or a couple who wants a small crossover with character, a higher view, a strong cabin and enough pace to never feel slow. It's also a smart pick if easy parking matters more to you than maximum luggage. Just sit in it first and sort the seat-and-wheel position before you commit to the i-Cockpit.

Skip it if you're four adults with full airport luggage, or a family that needs the back seat cool and the boot deep. For that, a more conventional small crossover with rear vents, or a proper mid-size SUV, will serve you better. The 2008 is a stylish two-person car that happens to seat five, and once you book it for what it is, it's one of the more enjoyable things to drive in this class.
