Peugeot 2008 2023 - start from 140 AED / day

There's a quiet surprise waiting in the Peugeot 2008 2023: a small economy crossover that's genuinely quick, and we hand it over anywhere in Dubai within one to two hours, fuelled and ready. The 1.2-litre turbo here makes 150 hp and gets the car to 100 in 8.7 seconds, which is brisk for a five-seat SUV on a city-car footprint. That pace, plus low running costs and a higher seat than a hatchback, is the case for it. The question this page answers is whether the compact size suits you, or whether four adults and a week of luggage mean you should size up. We'll be straight about where the line falls.

The pace is the part people don't expect

The 1.2 turbo punches well above its size. 150 hp in a body this small means the 2008 never feels strained merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road or overtaking above 100, and the 8.7-second 0-100 time gives you a real turn of speed when you need it. Most rivals in the economy class run out of breath at highway pace. This one doesn't, and that matters on the E11 where you're regularly slotting into fast-moving traffic.

The automatic stays smooth in stop-start crawl, and around town the turbo wakes up early so pulling away from lights is effortless. It's a city crossover that's equally happy on the highway, not an underpowered runabout out of its depth at speed.

Running cost and refuelling

The 44-litre tank is the figure to read twice. The 1.2 turbo is efficient on paper, but be realistic about Dubai: short trips, constant AC at full tilt, and stop-start traffic push real consumption up. Expect somewhere around 7 litres per 100 km in mixed city use, which still gives you roughly 600 km between fills. For most renters that's one fuel stop across a normal week, and petrol here is cheap, so the 2008 stays inexpensive to run even when you're not driving gently.

The 250 km included each day covers airport runs, commutes and the usual city loop without thought. Go past it and it's 1 AED per extra kilometre, which only bites on a long Hatta or Abu Dhabi day.

Who the 2008 actually fits

Think of this as the higher, smarter version of a small hatchback rather than a shrunk-down family SUV. Two adults, a couple of kids and a week of mall runs and beach days work fine. The raised seating gives a clear view over Dubai traffic, and the cabin carries the Peugeot character: a small steering wheel, a high digital binnacle, and a dashboard that feels a step above the economy class it's priced in.

Where it gets tight is four adults plus a week of airport luggage. The 434-litre boot is genuinely good for the size, beating most small hatchbacks and a fair few class rivals, and in practice that's two medium cases plus a soft bag, or one large case and the weekly shop. For two people travelling, luggage won't decide this car. For four people each with a full case, it might, and a sedan boot could suit you better.

Heat, parking and the city stuff

The cabin cools quickly because there isn't much of it. Park in the sun at 45 degrees and the 2008's small interior pulls down to comfortable faster than a big SUV does, with strong front vents doing the heavy lifting. There are no rear air vents, so on the hottest afternoons back-seat passengers feel it a beat later than those up front. Start the AC the moment you get in and it's a non-issue for the short hops this car is built for.

Parking is one of the 2008's strongest points. At just over 4.3 metres it tucks into bays that defeat a midsize SUV, the turning circle suits tight U-turns, and the 170 mm clearance clears mall ramps and speed bumps without the scraping you get in low sedans. It isn't a desert tool, so leave soft sand to a proper 4x4, but for paved Dubai it's exactly the right size.

A few rental rules sit with you, not us. Salik tolls run on the account you're driving under, and any RTA fines pass through to the renter, so watch lane discipline and speed cameras on the E11. Children under four need a child seat, which we can add on request.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the 2008 if you're a couple or a small family who wants a higher seat, easy parking and surprising pace for the class, and you value the Peugeot cabin feel over outright space. It's the sweet spot between a basic city hatch and a full SUV, and the turbo engine is what makes it more fun to drive than the rate suggests.

If you're four adults travelling with luggage, or you want a roomier back seat and a bigger boot, step up to the 3008. And if cabin style and pace mean nothing to you and you only want the cheapest possible automatic, a plainer rival in the same class will save you a little more. For most people booking a stylish, parkable crossover for a Dubai week, the 2008 is the one we'd hand over.
