Seven people, and how long the cabin takes to cool

The seats are the easy part. Row three takes two adults for a couple of hours without anyone rearranging their knees, and the sliding rear doors mean you can load a toddler in a tight bay without swinging a door into the car alongside. Row two slides and folds, so a rear-facing child seat and a tall passenger can share the same bench.

Cooling a cabin this size is slower, and there is no honest way around it. Left in the open in July, expect a few minutes on full fan before the air turns genuinely cold, and expect the front to feel right well before the back does. What saves it is the ducting running the length of the roof, which puts cold air over rows two and three instead of leaving them to catch whatever drifts back from the dashboard. Start on recirculation and open a window for the first thirty seconds to push the hot air out.

What a week in it costs to run

One vehicle means one delivery, one set of keys, and one Salik account collecting gate crossings instead of two. On a week of city driving with a couple of trips down Sheikh Zayed Road, that toll difference alone is not trivial, and it is the saving most people forget to put in the comparison.

Fuel behaves better than the size suggests, because this is a diesel and diesel is the cheaper pump in the UAE. Opel's 16.9 km/l is a light-load figure. Seven up with the AC working hard, plan on something in the low teens, which still leaves more than 800 km between fills on the 70 litre tank. Most renters put one fill through it in a normal week.

The honest caveat runs the other way on mileage. Two cars carry two 300 km daily allowances between them, one van carries a single 300 km allowance, and anything past it is charged at AED 0.5 per kilometre. For a group going to the same places that rarely bites, since you drive one set of trips instead of duplicating them. For a group that splits up during the day, it can. Work out whether your week is one itinerary or two before you decide.

Roof height is the number to check

Forget ground clearance and check the ceiling. This van stands 1,890 mm tall, so mall and hotel parking posted at 2.0 m and above is fine, while plenty of older residential basements carry a 1.8 m or 1.9 m barrier and will stop you at the ramp. Check the building you park at overnight before the van arrives, not after.

Width is friendlier than the shape implies. The body is 1,920 mm across, about 2,204 mm with the mirrors out, so a standard bay works once you fold them, and the sliding doors let passengers out where a swing door would not open far enough. On the highway it is calmer than it looks. That 400 Nm of torque pulls a fully loaded van up to 120 without the 8-speed hunting for a gear, and it stays quiet at a cruise. Push well past that and the wind noise and the fuel figure both start charging you for it.

Two limits worth stating plainly. The diesel drives the front wheels only, so soft sand is out, and a desert camp needs a proper 4x4 instead. And the usual local terms apply: Salik tolls are billed to you, any RTA fine during the rental passes to the renter, and children under four need a proper child seat, which we can fit before delivery.

Book it if you were about to book two cars

If your plan involves five to seven people going to the same places at the same time, take the van. One vehicle for a group weekend, a fortnight of visiting family, or a crew moving between sites will cost less to run than two smaller cars and will keep everyone travelling together, which is the part nobody prices in until they have spent a Friday afternoon following a second car through traffic.

Skip it if the group genuinely splits during the day, because then two cars buy flexibility a single van cannot. Skip it if you are four or fewer with normal luggage, since a crossover or a sedan does that job on less fuel and parks more easily. And check that overnight barrier height first.
