That buys you space and costs you two things. There's no off-road ability here, since the 2.0 diesel drives the front wheels only, and a soft sand track will stop it. And it looks like what it is. If the car is part of the impression you're making at a hotel forecourt, a Pajero or a Carnival carries that better. Renters who care about the inside more than the outside are the ones who come back for this.

Seven seats and the luggage, at the same time

This is where the comparison stops being close. Fold a third row up in a mid-size SUV and you're left with a shelf that swallows two backpacks. Heat, height and the way it drives here

A cabin this big takes longer to cool than a sedan, and there's no honest way around that. The saving grace is that the ducting runs the length of the roof, so rows two and three actually get cold air instead of whatever drifts back from the dashboard. That's the opposite of most seven-seat crossovers, where the third row is an afterthought in summer. Leave the windows open a finger's width if the car sits outside all day, and start the AC on recirculation rather than fresh air.

Height is the thing to plan around, not ground clearance. At 1.89 m tall it clears most Dubai mall and hotel parking at 2.0 m and above, but plenty of older residential basements post a 1.8 m or 1.9 m barrier, and a roof rail on the wrong day makes that a bad afternoon. Check your building before you book. Width is friendlier than it looks: 1.92 m across the body, about 2.20 m with the mirrors out, so a standard bay works if you fold them.

On Sheikh Zayed Road it's calmer than the shape suggests. The 400 Nm of torque means it pulls up to 120 fully loaded without the gearbox hunting, and the 8-speed keeps the engine quiet at cruise. Push much past that and the aerodynamics start charging you, in noise and in fuel. Opel's 16.9 km/l is a light-load number. Seven up with the AC working, plan on something closer to 12, which still puts a realistic 800 km or so between fills on a 70 litre tank. That's one fuel stop in a normal Dubai week.
