Head out toward Hatta on a Friday morning and half the SUVs on the road are crossovers wearing off-road badges they will never test. The Nissan X-Terra 2024 is not one of them. It rents in Dubai as a genuine body-on-frame SUV, built on the same ladder-frame chassis as Nissan's Navara pickup, with the ground clearance and four-wheel-drive hardware to actually use a graded desert track rather than just look like it can. That is not a lot of muscle for a body-on-frame SUV this size, so treat it as durable and capable rather than quick. Some versions send drive to the rear wheels only, others add part-time four-wheel drive with an electronic locking rear differential for loose surfaces. On the road, it rides high and firm, with 243 mm of clearance and approach and departure angles built for real ruts, not just speed bumps. It does not corner like a crossover and does not want to. Point it at a graded Hatta trail and it feels at home. Ask it to sprint past traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road and the 165 hp shows its limit, so plan overtakes rather than expect them.

Seven seats, and what fits behind them

Seven seats across three rows is standard here, whatever a stray listing might say. The middle row earns its keep daily: wide enough for two adults or three kids without complaint, and where most passengers actually sit. The third row is honest about its job. It folds up from the sides and suits kids or a short adult for a mall run, not grown adults on a long highway haul, and getting back there means tipping the second row forward first, same as any three-row SUV.

Luggage is where a seven-seater always makes you choose. With all three rows in use, the space behind the back seats holds a couple of soft bags or the weekly shop, not a stack of hard cases. Fold the third row down and the load area opens into something genuinely useful, big enough for a week's luggage while still carrying five. Seven people and full cases on one airport run is asking too much of any car this size, and the X-Terra is no exception.

At 4.9 metres long, it wants more care in a tight multi-storey car park than a crossover would, and the turning circle rewards patience over a Marina ramp. That is the trade for ground clearance that shrugs off speed bumps and steep basement ramps that make lower cars wince.

Fuel, heat and running a body-on-frame SUV

The 78-litre tank is one of the quiet advantages of a truck-based SUV like this. Figure roughly 10 to 11 litres per 100 km in Dubai traffic with the air conditioning working hard, which still means fewer stops across a week than the seat count and size might suggest. The rental includes 250 km a day, then AED 0.5 for every extra kilometre, a fair allowance for city errands and school runs with room for the odd longer trip. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental fall to the renter, as with every car we hand over, and under-fours need a proper child seat.

Heat is worth being straight about, because a body-on-frame SUV has more cabin to cool than a hatchback and a heavier structure that holds warmth longer after a day in the sun. Climb back in after a few hours parked in July and the first minute or two is genuinely warm while the system catches up. Once it is moving, the front vents pull hard and the rear vents keep the back rows from waiting on leftover cold air, which matters with three rows full. Run the AC for a minute before everyone piles in, and park in shade where you can. It copes with a full family on the hottest afternoons, just not instantly.

Who should rent it, and who should size down

Rent the X-Terra if you want a real 4x4, not a badge on a soft crossover: a family or group heading to Hatta or a graded desert track for the weekend, who also need three rows for the rest of the week. The locking rear differential and genuine ground clearance take this car places a Kicks or an X-Trail cannot go, at a rate well under a Patrol or Land Cruiser. Treat serious dune driving as a skill rather than a switch: drop your tyre pressures, carry recovery gear, and go with someone who knows the route.

Size down if your week is really just city driving and airport runs for four or five people. The modest power and truck-firm ride are the price of that off-road ability, and a car-based crossover rides softer, uses less fuel and slots into parking bays with less effort. If serious dune capability with more punch is the goal, a Patrol earns its higher rate. For everything in between, the X-Terra is the honest, capable middle ground.
