Nissan X Terra 2024 - start from 520 AED / day

The Nissan X-Terra 2024 is the rare body-on-frame SUV you can rent in Dubai for a real desert weekend and still seat seven for the school run, and we hand it over at your door in one to two hours. This isn't a soft crossover dressed up to look tough. It rides on a ladder frame, runs selectable 4WD, and sits high enough to take a graded track without flinching. Our argument is straightforward: if your week mixes Hatta, a sand camp or a wadi drive with normal family duty, this is the right tool. If you never leave tarmac, it's more truck than you need, and we'll point you elsewhere at the end.

Where it earns its keep: off the tarmac

The X-Terra is built for the days a crossover gets nervous. The 4WD system lets you lock drive to all four wheels for loose surfaces, and the 243 mm of ground clearance is the headline number: that's serious height, well above the 180-or-so you get from a typical family SUV. Graded desert tracks, the gravel run to a campsite, a rocky wadi approach, all of it is within reach. For soft dune driving you still drop tyre pressures and bring someone who knows the area, but the hardware is honest about what it can do.

That same clearance makes it relaxed about everything Dubai throws at a car day to day. Speed bumps, the lip into a basement, a flooded underpass after a rare downpour, none of it troubles you. The trade-off is a tall step up into the cabin, so keep that in mind if you're loading small kids or older passengers.

The engine, and how it feels loaded

Under the bonnet is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol making 165 hp through a 7-speed automatic. That's adequate rather than quick. On Sheikh Zayed Road it cruises comfortably at 120, but a full cabin and a hard overtake ask you to plan ahead, because this is a heavy SUV and not a powerful one. Where the gearing pays off is low-speed control on a slope or in sand, where you want measured response, not a peaky engine. For the airport run, the highway settles it nicely, and the upright cabin stays planted.

The big 78-litre tank is the reassuring part for anyone heading out of the city. A V6 desert SUV would drink hard, but the four-cylinder X-Terra is more moderate, around 11 km/L in mixed use, so the large tank gives you a genuinely long leg between fills. On a Hatta or east-coast trip you're not hunting for a station, which is exactly what you want when the next pump might be far off.

Seven seats and the luggage trade

The X-Terra seats seven, and like most three-row SUVs the back row is the variable. It's sized for kids and teenagers on Dubai-length trips rather than two adults on a long highway haul. With all three rows up, cargo space behind the back seats is modest, enough for a few soft bags and the day's shopping, not a camp's worth of kit. Fold the third row and it opens into a long, square load bay that takes a family's gear or the airport cases without a fight. The rule for a desert weekend is simple: carry the people or carry the gear, not both at full load. For four or five aboard with the third row down, there's room to pack properly.

Cooling a big cabin in the heat

A tall, boxy cabin is a lot of air to chill at 45 degrees, so the first minutes after a sun-baked park are warm. The X-Terra's climate system has the capacity to bring it down once you're moving, and there's airflow to the rear seats, which matters when kids are in the back on a summer afternoon. Crack the windows for the first few seconds to dump the hottest air, then let the AC work. For a full-cabin trip out to the dunes, that rear airflow is the difference between a comfortable drive and a mutiny.

The rules and costs that fall to you

Salik tolls are charged to you at each gantry, and any RTA fines during the rental are yours, so mind the speed cameras on the highway. Belts are required in every seat, the back rows included, and a child under four needs a child seat by law, which we can fit on request. With seven seats in play, tell us how many child seats you need when you book so the right ones are on the car at the kerb.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the X-Terra 2024 if your week genuinely involves leaving the tarmac: Hatta, a desert camp, a wadi drive, or rough tracks, and you also need seven seats for the family. The clearance, the 4WD and the big tank are the reasons to choose it, and few rentals at this size offer all three.

Skip it if you stay on sealed roads. The tall step-in, the modest power for the weight, and the truck-like ride are costs you'd be paying for capability you never use, and a road-biased crossover or a midsize sedan would be easier to live with and lighter on fuel. The X-Terra is a specialist, and it's worth it when the job actually calls for one.
