We rent the Nissan X-Terra 2024 across Dubai with payment settled at the door, cards, cash, transfer or the usual wallets, so nothing is tied up before the car turns up. The X-Terra sits in an unusual spot: a genuine seven-seat, body-on-frame SUV at a rate close to ordinary family crossovers. The trade you make for that space and toughness is pace and refinement, and our argument here is that the X-Terra makes sense when you'll actually use the seven seats and the rough-road ability, and is the wrong rental if you won't.
The headline is seats, so start there. The X-Terra carries seven, and like most three-row SUVs the back row is the variable. It's sized for kids and teenagers on Dubai-length hops, not two adults on a long highway leg. With all three rows up, the space behind the last row is modest, enough for a few soft bags and the day's shopping, not a family's full kit. Fold that third row and it opens into a long, square load bay that swallows the airport cases or a camp's gear without complaint.
So the rule for a full trip is plain: carry the people or carry the gear at full load, rarely both. For four or five aboard with the third row down, there's proper room to pack. If you'll only ever have two or three people and a couple of bags, you're renting a lot of car you won't use, and a midsize crossover would be easier to live with.

The 2.5-litre four makes 165 hp through a seven-speed automatic, and that's adequate rather than brisk. On Sheikh Zayed Road it settles at 120 comfortably, but a full load and a quick overtake ask you to plan ahead, because this is a heavy SUV and not a powerful one. Where the gearing earns its place is low-speed control on a slope or in soft going, where measured response beats a peaky engine.
The big 78-litre tank is the reassuring part if you're heading out of the city. A V6 desert SUV would drink hard, but the four-cylinder X-Terra is moderate at roughly 11 km/L, so the large tank gives a long leg between fills. On a Hatta or east-coast run you're not hunting for a station, which is exactly what you want when the next pump might be far off.
The 243 mm of ground clearance is the number that separates this from a soft crossover. That's serious height, well above the 180-or-so a typical family SUV gives you, and with the selectable 4WD locking drive to all four wheels, graded desert tracks, the gravel run to a campsite and a rocky wadi approach are all within reach. For soft dune driving you still drop tyre pressures and bring someone who knows the area, but the hardware is honest about what it can do.
That same height makes it relaxed about ordinary Dubai duty. Speed bumps, the lip into a basement car park, a flooded underpass after a rare downpour, none of it troubles you. The cost is a tall step up into the cabin, so keep that in mind if you're loading small kids or older passengers.
A boxy, upright cabin is a lot of air to chill at 45 degrees, so the first minutes after a sun-baked park are warm. The climate system has the capacity to bring it down once you're moving, and there's airflow to the rear, which matters with kids in the back on a summer afternoon. Crack the windows for a few seconds to dump the hottest air, then let the AC work.
On the costs that sit with you: Salik tolls are charged at each gantry, and any RTA fines during the rental are yours, so mind the highway cameras. Belts are required in every seat, the back rows included, and a child under four needs a child seat by law. With seven seats in play, tell us how many child seats you need at booking so the right ones are on the car at the kerb.
Rent the X-Terra 2024 if your week genuinely needs both halves of what it offers: seven seats for the family and the clearance and 4WD for Hatta, a desert camp or rough tracks. Few rentals at this price give you all of that, and that combination is the reason to choose it.
Skip it if you stay on sealed roads with a small group. The tall step-in, the modest power for the weight and the truck-like ride are real costs, and you'd be paying them for capability you never touch. A road-biased crossover or a midsize sedan would be lighter, faster and easier to park. The X-Terra is a specialist, and it's worth it when the job actually calls for one.
