Nissan X Terra 2023 - start from 475 AED / day

The Nissan X-Terra 2023 is the rare rental that pairs a torquey V6 with genuine ground clearance, and we deliver it across Dubai with a no-deposit option so a card hold doesn't eat your trip budget. This one runs the 4.0-litre V6 and gets to 100 km/h in about 8.5 seconds, which for a tall, rugged SUV is properly brisk. Our argument is simple: if you want a tough, body-on-frame SUV that has the muscle to keep up on the highway and the hardware to take a Hatta track or a desert weekend in its stride, this is the pick. For smooth, quiet, tarmac-only family duty, a softer crossover will treat you better, and we'll be honest about that below.

What the V6 buys you

The 4.0-litre V6 makes 180 hp through an automatic and an all-wheel-drive system. The number that matters in daily use is the response: this engine pulls strongly from low down, so merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road and overtaking a slow lorry happen without the strained, flat-out feel a small four-cylinder SUV gives you. Loaded with passengers and the AC fighting the heat, it still has something in hand. That 8.5-second sprint is the proof, but the everyday benefit is just relaxed, confident pace.

The trade for the ladder-frame toughness is a firmer, busier ride over speed bumps and patched roads than a crossover serves up. That's the cost of the off-road ability, not a fault.

Clearance, all-wheel drive and the desert

This is where the X-Terra earns its keep over a crossover. At 243 mm of ground clearance, steep mall ramps, high speed bumps, and broken construction-road edges are non-events, the kind of thing that has lower cars crawling or scraping. Point it at Hatta's mountain roads or a graded desert track and it stays composed where a low car would struggle.

The all-wheel-drive system gives real soft-sand capability, enough that a confident driver can air down and head onto the dunes for a day. If you've never driven sand, go with someone who has and learn the basics first, because clearance and driven wheels help you, they don't drive for you. If your weekends stay on tarmac, that hardware is just weight you're carrying, and a crossover would suit you better.

Space, the family and the luggage

Five seats, with proper room up front and a back bench that takes three for the school run or two adults in comfort on a longer drive. The real story is the boot: at this size it's a deep, square load bay that swallows a serious airport haul, prams, or a desert weekend's camping kit. Fold the rear seats and you get a long flat floor for bulky gear or a flat-pack from the mall. For a family of four or five with luggage, it loads everything at once without a game of Tetris. Where a low sedan makes you stack cases, the X-Terra just takes them.

Heat, AC and the cabin

The cabin is plain and built to last rather than to impress: hard-wearing plastics, a sensible layout, nothing that wows at handover. What matters more in June is that the AC has a big box to cool and manages it. The front vents are strong, and the second row gets airflow too, so kids in the middle aren't left melting. After it's been parked in the sun, give it ten minutes with the fans up before everyone piles in. A windscreen sunshade and a thirty-second window-crack on pickup make a real difference here.

Living with it in Dubai

It's a tall, wide SUV close to five metres long, so tight multi-storey bays and Marina ramps want a bit more care than a hatchback does. The high seating position and good visibility help, parking sensors take the stress out of a mall squeeze, and U-turns just need a touch more room. None of it is hard once you've driven it for a day. On running cost, plan for around 11 to 12 km/L in mixed driving, less if you're heavy in traffic or out on sand; the 78-litre tank means a week of normal family driving is roughly one to one-and-a-half fills. A few rules to keep in mind: Salik tolls run on your account through the rental, RTA fines during the hire pass to you, belts are mandatory in every seat, and children under four need a child seat, which we can fit on request.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the X-Terra 2023 if you want a tough SUV with V6 muscle, real ground clearance, and the all-wheel drive to back a Hatta or desert weekend, plus a big boot for the family's gear. Few SUVs at this rate combine highway pace with honest off-road ability the way this one does.

Skip it if your driving never leaves the city and the highway. The body-on-frame ride is firmer than a crossover's and the cabin is plain, so for smooth, quiet tarmac duty a car-based crossover will leave you happier. But if you want a rugged SUV with genuine pace and the ability to leave the asphalt, the X-Terra is the sensible book, and the no-deposit option keeps it easy.
