Need a tough seven-seater for a big family week without tying up cash on a deposit? We rent the Nissan X-Terra 2022 across Dubai with a no-deposit option, so the whole booking can ride on your card without a hold against it. This is the body-on-frame, high-riding 4x4 of Nissan's lineup, not a soft crossover dressed up for the school run. Built on a ladder frame with real ground clearance and a 4WD system, it's made for a family that wants three rows, luggage, and a Hatta or desert weekend on the same car. What this page sorts out is whether that ruggedness suits your week, or whether you'd be happier in something smoother.
The X-Terra shares its bones with Nissan's pickup, and you feel it. The 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol makes 165 hp through a seven-speed automatic, and on a 4WD trim you get a proper transfer case, hill descent control, and on the top grade a rear differential lock. That's the hardware that lets it climb a dune track or a graded desert road that a car-based SUV would scrabble on.
The trade-off is honest and worth stating up front. The ride is firmer than a crossover, the cabin is plainer, and with seven people and bags aboard the 165 hp engine works hard to get a heavy ladder-frame SUV moving. It's relaxed once it's rolling. It's just not quick, and it doesn't pretend to be.

Seven seats is the headline, and the X-Terra delivers genuine three-row space rather than a token bench. Two adults up front, three across the middle row, and two kids or smaller adults in the third row works for a day trip or an airport run. Where you have to be realistic is luggage with that third row up. Behind the back seats there's room for a few soft bags and the day's shopping, not a stack of hard suitcases. Fold the third row and the boot opens up into a proper cargo bay that swallows a family's cases for a week.
So the practical answer: seven people plus light bags, fine. Seven people plus a full week of airport luggage, you're folding one row or roof-loading. For a family of five or six who want the seats free and the boot full, it's ideal.
Dubai summers push into the high 40s, and a tall SUV that's been parked in the sun takes a moment to recover. The X-Terra's front vents pull hard once the AC is running, and on a cabin this size you'll want to give it a few minutes with the fans up before everyone piles in. The plus of the three-row layout is rear air for the back passengers, so kids in the second and third rows aren't left baking while the front cools. On a 45-degree afternoon, crack the windows for the first thirty seconds to dump the hot air, then let it settle.
On Sheikh Zayed Road the X-Terra cruises comfortably at the limit. It's tall and a bit boxy, so it isn't the car you choose for quick overtakes, but for steady highway miles between emirates or a DXB or DWC airport run it's stable and easy. The 78-litre tank is the quiet hero here. At the official 8.7 L/100km it's good for a long stretch of motorway between fills, though real Dubai driving, stop-start traffic and full AC, will land you higher than that figure, so plan to refuel roughly once across a heavy week rather than counting on the brochure number.
Where it earns its keep is the weekend. That 243 mm of ground clearance and the 4WD system mean a graded desert track to a camp, or the climbs around Hatta, are within reach in a way no crossover matches. Keep tyre pressures and your route sensible and it handles light off-road work without drama.
This is a big vehicle, just under five metres long, so Marina basements and tight mall bays need a bit of patience and a look at the mirrors. The upside of the height is that speed bumps and steep mall ramps that scrape a low car are a non-issue. Reverse sensors help in the narrow stuff.
A couple of operational notes. Salik tolls run to your account as you pass the gantries, and any RTA fines during the rental pass to the renter, so drive to the limits. Child seats are required for under-fours, and we can fit one on request. Seatbelts are mandatory in every row, third included.
Rent the X-Terra if you're a big family or a group on a budget who wants one car to do the airport run, the daily errands, and a desert or Hatta weekend, and you don't mind a firmer ride and a plainer cabin in exchange for real toughness and three usable rows. It's a lot of practical SUV without a deposit tying up your money.
Skip it if your week is mostly a smooth-riding school run and supermarket loop with no off-road plans. A car-based crossover will be comfier and quieter for that. And if you'll regularly load seven adults and want the engine to feel effortless on the highway, size up to a larger V6 SUV. The X-Terra is the rugged, affordable middle ground, and for the family that actually uses its capability, that's exactly the point.
