Most of the genuine 4x4s on a Dubai rental fleet, the ones with real ground clearance and a locking differential rather than a badge, ask for a driver who's at least 25. The Nissan X-Terra 2022 breaks that pattern. You can book it from age 20, years earlier than most trucks in its class, and you're still getting the same body-on-frame chassis Nissan shares with the Navara pickup, not a softened crossover with off-road styling bolted on. We get it to your door within 1 to 2 hours of booking, cash or debit fine at handover. This page settles one question: does the lower age bar and honest 4x4 hardware make the X-Terra the right call for your week, or does the mileage deal and modest engine point you elsewhere.
Clear the name confusion first, because it changes what you should expect. An old North American Xterra ran a 4.0-litre V6 and stopped selling over a decade ago. The Nissan X-Trail sold in the UAE today is a different, unrelated crossover with no ladder frame. Neither has anything to do with the SUV in front of you. The Gulf-market X-Terra is its own vehicle, built on the Navara's chassis, and that's the whole reason age 20 gets you something with real capability rather than a jacked-up hatchback.
Power comes from a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, 165 hp and 241 Nm, paired with a 7-speed automatic. That's a modest figure for a two-tonne body-on-frame vehicle, so plan your overtakes on Sheikh Zayed Road rather than expect a quick one. Some versions stay rear-wheel drive only, others add a part-time four-wheel-drive system with an electronic locking rear differential for sand and loose gravel. There's no confirmed low-range crawler gear sitting on top of that setup, so if a slow, technical descent is part of your plan, ask us to confirm the exact drivetrain before it leaves the yard.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Engine | 2.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol |
| Power | 165 hp / 241 Nm |
| Transmission | 7-speed automatic |
| Drive | Rear-wheel drive, or part-time four-wheel drive with locking rear differential on some versions |
| Seats | 7 (three rows) |
| Fuel tank | 78 litres |
| Fuel economy | roughly 10 to 11 L/100km in Dubai city driving |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4,900 x 1,865 x 1,865 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,850 mm |
| Ground clearance | 243 mm |
| Approach / departure angle | 32.3 degrees / 26.6 degrees |
| Colour | White |
On tarmac the ride is firm, closer to a pickup than a crossover, and that's the deliberate trade for what's underneath. Point it down a graded track near Hatta and the 243 mm of clearance, plus approach and departure angles over 30 degrees, do real work rather than sit on a spec sheet unused.
Seven seats across three rows come standard, worth stating plainly since some listings still show this car as a five-seater. The middle row carries the daily load: wide enough for two adults or three kids without anyone complaining by the second hour. The third row is a real seat rather than a token one, but it suits children or a short adult on a mall run, not four grown adults on a highway trip, and reaching it means folding the middle row forward first.
Boot space follows the pattern every three-row SUV lands on. With all seven seats up, there's room for a couple of soft bags or the weekly shop, not a stack of hard suitcases for a week away. Fold the third row down and the load area turns square and genuinely useful, big enough for a family's luggage while five still travel in comfort. One airport run with seven people and everyone's full cases will force a choice between seats and boot, and this car is no exception to that rule.
At 4.9 metres long, the X-Terra wants a bit more attention in a tight multi-storey bay than a compact crossover needs, and the turning circle rewards a careful reverse over a rushed one. That length is what buys the ground clearance that turns a steep basement ramp or a rough speed bump into something you stop noticing.
This rental works differently from a daily cap. You get 4,500 km included across the whole booking, not per day, so a short weekend trip carries a big cushion while a longer stay needs you to track the total rather than assume it resets each morning. Go past that figure and it's AED 3.0 for every extra kilometre, which is a steep rate next to some of the cars in our fleet, so it pays to add up your plans, especially a Hatta or desert weekend, before you commit to a longer booking.
The 78-litre tank works in the car's favour here. Figure roughly 10 to 11 litres per 100 km in Dubai traffic with the air conditioning running hard, which still means fewer fuel stops across a week than the size of the car suggests. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental fall to the renter, as they do on every car we hand over, and children under four need a proper child seat rather than a lap belt.
Heat is worth being honest about. A body-on-frame SUV has more cabin volume to cool and a heavier structure that holds the day's warmth longer than a small hatchback would. Climb back in after a few hours parked under the July sun and the first minute or two runs genuinely warm while the system catches up. Once it's moving, the front vents pull hard and the rear vents mean the third row isn't left waiting on stale air, which matters when all three rows are full. Start the engine and give the AC a minute before everyone climbs in, and park in shade if you can find it.
Rent the X-Terra if the age bar has been shutting you out of real 4x4s elsewhere, or if you want genuine off-road hardware, a locking rear differential and honest ground clearance, for a Hatta weekend alongside seven seats for the rest of your trip. At 20, this is one of the youngest minimum ages attached to a truck-based SUV on the market, and the chassis underneath backs that access up with real capability rather than a marketing claim. Treat any dune work as a skill rather than a switch: drop your tyre pressures, carry recovery gear, and go with someone who's driven the route before.
Pick something else if your week is really city errands and airport runs for four or five people, or if long-distance driving is part of the plan. The steep extra-kilometre rate makes this a poor fit for anyone racking up serious distance, and a car-based crossover will ride softer, use less fuel and cost less past the included mileage. If you need more punch for sustained highway hauling or bigger dunes, a Patrol is worth the higher rate. For a younger driver who wants a genuine off-roader with three rows and doesn't plan to chase big mileage, the X-Terra is a rare match. You'll need to be 20 to take the keys, and we can have it at your door within 1 to 2 hours of booking.
