Need a seven-seater that won't drain a family budget in a single Dubai week? We bring the Mitsubishi Xpander 2024 to your door in 1 to 2 hours, fuelled and ready, so you can skip the rental-desk queue at the airport entirely. This is the cheap-to-run people-mover in our fleet: a 1.5-litre automatic that sips fuel, parks like a compact, and still seats seven. The case for it is simple. If your week is school runs, mall trips, and the occasional airport pickup with cousins in tow, the Xpander keeps both the rate and the fuel bill low without leaving anyone standing on the kerb.
Most seven-seaters in Dubai are thirsty. The Xpander isn't, and that's why it books out with families watching their spend. The 1.5-litre engine and 45-litre tank mean a full tank stretches a long way across a week of city driving, roughly the 6 to 7 litres per 100km range in real mixed use. You're not pulling into a station every few days. For a family doing the regular Dubai loop of nursery drop-offs, grocery runs, and weekend visits across the city, that adds up to real savings against a V6 SUV that wants premium fuel and empties faster.
Two honest caveats. The economy figures assume sensible driving, not a constant full house with the AC on maximum. And on Salik gates the renter pays the tolls, the same as any car, so a daily commute still adds up regardless of how little fuel you burn.
The Xpander is a proper three-row MPV, not a five-seater with jump seats. The first two rows are genuinely comfortable for adults. The third row is where you size your expectations: it's fine for kids, teenagers, or two adults on a short hop across town, but it's not where you put grandparents for an hour-long run to Hatta.
Here's the trade-off renters need to hear before booking. With all seven seats up, boot space is tight, enough for a few soft bags and a backpack, not a week of hard cases. Fold the third row and you get a flat, deep load floor that swallows a serious airport haul or a Carrefour run for eight. So the realistic split is this: seven people and small bags, or five people and luggage. You rarely get both at once. For a family of five or six with luggage, it's ideal. For seven adults plus suitcases to DXB, you'll want to size up to a larger SUV.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Engine | 1.5L 4-cylinder petrol |
| Transmission | Automatic |
| Drivetrain | Front-wheel drive |
| Seats | 7 |
| Power | 105 hp |
| Fuel economy | approx. 6 to 7 L/100km (mixed) |
| Fuel tank | 45 litres |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4595 x 1750 x 1750 mm |
| Ground clearance | 205 mm |
| Body type | 7-seat MPV |
For something that carries seven, the Xpander drives like a much smaller car. It's narrow by MPV standards at 1750mm, the steering is light, and visibility is high, so multi-storey ramps at the Marina and tight mall bays don't turn into a sweat. U-turns are quick. The 205mm of ground clearance clears Dubai's tall speed bumps and sloped mall entrances without scraping, and it sits high enough that the kids get a good view out.
Where you feel the 105 hp is when the car is full and you ask it to overtake on the E11. With seven aboard and the AC working hard, the engine has to be wrung out to pass a truck at speed, and the automatic drops a gear and revs to do it. It cruises happily at the legal limit. It just doesn't have much in reserve once it's loaded, so plan your overtakes on Sheikh Zayed Road rather than forcing them.
Cooling a tall, glassy cabin from a 45-degree soak is the real Dubai test, and the Xpander handles it better than most budget cars because it has rear air vents feeding the second and third rows, not just front blowers. Park it in the sun and the front cabin pulls down quickly; the third row takes a few minutes longer, which is normal for any MPV this size. Start the car, give it a minute before loading kids in, and the back settles. For a family car in this heat, having vents that actually reach the people in the rearmost seats matters more than any single comfort feature.
A couple of Dubai rules worth a line: RTA fines during your rental pass to you, seat belts are required in every row, and children under four need a proper child seat, which we can fit on request.
Rent the Xpander if you're a family of five or six who wants seven seats in reserve and a fuel bill that stays sensible across a full week. It's the right call for everyday Dubai life: nursery runs, mall trips, airport pickups, the lot. It parks easily, cools its rear rows, and keeps your spend down better than any thirsty SUV.
Don't rent it if your week is seven adults plus a full set of suitcases, or long, fully loaded highway hauls where you'll want stronger overtaking muscle. For that, step up to a larger seven-seat SUV with a bigger engine and a deeper boot. But for the family that mostly drives the city and occasionally needs the extra row, the Xpander is the cheapest sensible way to seat seven in Dubai.
