There's no turbo, no hybrid assistance and no all-wheel-drive version of this car, so treat the tall stance as a parking advantage, not a sand credential. On Sheikh Zayed Road it settles into 100 to 120 km/h without fuss, and the CVT keeps the cabin reasonably quiet at a cruise. Ask it to overtake with all seven seats full and you'll feel the gap between the car's size and its output, so plan the move a few seconds ahead rather than expect an instant kick down. The cabin is basic, simple plastics and straightforward switchgear, built for carrying people cheaply rather than pampering them.

Seven real seats, one small boot

The layout is two up front, three across the middle bench, and two proper seats in the back, arranged two-three-two. That third row genuinely seats two people; it isn't a pair of jump seats added to hit a number on a spec sheet. Kids and shorter adults ride back there without complaint on a school run or an airport transfer. Put two tall adults in that third row for a long highway trip and they'll want to swap by the second hour, which is the honest limit of a car this size.

Luggage is where the seven seats cost you something. With all three rows up, the boot behind the third row holds around 160 litres, room for backpacks and a couple of soft bags, not seven people's suitcases. Fold that third row flat and the Xpander turns into a roomy five-seater with a real load bay, easily two large cases and more. Drop the middle bench too and you're close to 1,630 litres, enough for a flatpack run or a stack of boxes. A parked Xpander in a Dubai summer heats up like any MPV this size, and with three rows of seats there's more cabin air to pull down once you're moving. The front vents are strong and bring the first two rows to comfortable within a few minutes. The third row lags behind, simply because the air has further to travel through a basic climate system, not a luxury one. On the worst afternoons, start the engine and let it run a few minutes before loading everyone in, and park in shade or a covered bay where you can. It copes with a full group through July without drama, but it doesn't pretend to be more than it is.

Fuel, mileage and what a week costs

The 45-litre tank returns roughly 500 to 600 km in real Dubai city driving with the air conditioning working, closer to 8 litres per 100 km once you count stop-start traffic and a full load, rather than the optimistic combined figures quoted in other markets. A normal week of errands, school runs and one longer outing usually means a single stop at the pump.

This rental includes 250 km a day, plenty for ordinary city life with room for the odd longer trip, and anything past that runs AED 0.5 per extra kilometre, so a full day out to Hatta or the east coast is worth a quick sum first. Minimum age to take the keys is 25, higher than some cars on this fleet, so check everyone on the booking meets that before you commit. If your week is built around fast, fully loaded highway driving, the modest engine will feel stretched, so look at something with more power under the bonnet. And if you're honestly only ever four people, a five-seat crossover costs less to rent, parks just as easily, and leaves you paying for nothing you don't use.
