Nothing goes wrong, but the noise arrives before the acceleration does. Leave a little more room than you would in a turbocharged crossover and it stops being an issue. At a steady 120 the car settles down and goes quiet again.

One thing we will not guess at: UAE Outlanders are sold in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive form, and no trim is named on this page, so we cannot promise which one arrives at your door. Treat soft sand and dune tracks as out of bounds either way. If the weekend involves driving off the tarmac, book a proper 4x4 instead.

Placing it in a bay, clearing a ramp

Our own experience across Dubai puts the realistic figure nearer 9 or 10, because the AC runs hard for most of the year and city traffic never lets the engine settle. On a 55-litre tank that works out to roughly 550 to 600 km of real driving, so a standard week of school runs, mall trips and one longer drive means a single fill and perhaps a top-up before you hand the keys back.

The charges that surprise people sit elsewhere. Salik is billed to you every time you pass a gantry, and any RTA fine issued during the rental is yours to settle. You get 300 km a day, which covers ordinary Dubai use comfortably, though a same-day Abu Dhabi return will go past it at AED 0.5 for each extra kilometre.

Cooling a cabin that has been sitting in July

A seven-seat SUV parked in an open lot at midday is a hot box, and no rental car changes that. What matters is recovery time. The Outlander's front vents blow cold quickly and the front two rows are comfortable within two or three minutes of moving. Drop the windows for the first ten seconds as you pull away and you push the worst of the trapped air out, which makes far more difference than sitting still with the fan on maximum.

The back of a long cabin always lags. Row three is the last place to get cold, which is one more reason to keep it for short trips with children rather than an hour on the E11 in August. Belts are required in every seat, under-fours need a child seat, and we can fit one before delivery.
