What the ASX is good at

There's no drive-mode menu to think about, no fussy infotainment between you and the AC. You get in, you go.

Performance is modest and I'd rather say that plainly. The 150 hp engine moves a 5-seat crossover at a relaxed pace, fine for keeping up with traffic and merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road, but the CVT lets the revs climb when you ask for a hard overtake. On the E11 at a steady 100 to 120 it settles and cruises without drama. If you spend most of your driving inside the city, you'll never notice the ceiling. If you want shove, this isn't the car.

The design is dated, and you'll see that the moment a newer rival pulls up beside you. The trade is that everything works and nothing about it feels fragile after a hard summer.

The official numbers are 9 km/L in the city and 13 km/L on the highway, and Dubai's real-world figure sits closer to the city end once you factor in heat, constant AC, and stop-start traffic. It's not the most frugal car in its size, but you're not babysitting the fuel gauge either. One refuel a week is fair for normal city use.

Heat, parking and the everyday Dubai stuff

Cabin cooling is the thing renters ask about first in summer, and here the ASX is fine rather than special. The front vents pull hard, and a parked cabin that's been baking at 45 degrees comes down to bearable in a few minutes if you crack a window for the first thirty seconds and let the hot air push out. There are no rear vents to speak of, so back-seat passengers cool a beat slower. For two adults up front it's a non-issue.

At 4365 mm long it's a genuinely easy car to place. Marina ramps, mall multi-storey bays, tight U-turns, none of them are a fight, and the higher driving position helps you judge the corners of the car. Ground clearance is 195 mm, so speed bumps and steeper mall ramps clear without that nervous scrape you get in a low sedan. It's a road car, though, not a dune car. The 4WD versions handle a graded track or a sandy car park, but I wouldn't take any ASX trim deep into soft desert.

Two practical Dubai notes. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during your rental are billed to you, so the gantries on Sheikh Zayed Road and the airport approaches add up if you cross them daily. And seat belts are required in every seat, with a child seat mandatory for under-fours, which we can fit on request.

Does my luggage fit

The boot takes a couple of soft bags and a medium case easily, or one large suitcase plus a backpack for an airport run. Two people with a week's luggage are comfortable, and folding the rear seats gives you real flat space for a bulky purchase. Where it gets tight is the full house: four adults and four large cases heading to DXB at once. That's the point where I'd tell you to size up rather than wedge bags onto laps.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the ASX 2024 if you want a no-fuss daily driver for city commuting and errands, a higher seat than a hatchback gives you, and a car you genuinely don't have to think about. It's reliable, simple, and easy to park, and the no-deposit option makes it a clean booking. Couples, small families, and solo commuters are well served.

Look elsewhere if you want a modern cabin, stronger pull on the highway, or more rear space and boot room. A Hyundai Creta or Kia Seltos gives you a newer design and more room for not a lot more car. But if "dependable and easy" is the brief, the ASX does exactly that, every day, without asking for anything back.
