Most Dubai rental desks want you at 25 before they will hand you the keys to an SUV, but a Mitsubishi ASX 2022 rental here only asks that you be 21. That single number changes who this page is really for: a 22 or 23 year old resident, or a group of younger travellers, who has already been turned away elsewhere in this class. Clear that bar and the car itself asks very little of you. Five seats, a naturally aspirated engine and a CVT automatic Mitsubishi has run in this shape for years, delivered to your door within one to two hours of booking. The real question is whether a plain, dependable compact SUV with a lower age gate suits your week better than chasing a flashier badge elsewhere.
Mitsubishi fits the ASX with a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine using MIVEC valve timing, good for 150 hp and 197 Nm, sent to the front wheels through a CVT automatic. A higher grade of this generation carries all-wheel drive elsewhere in the GCC lineup, but the unit you get here is front-wheel drive, which is exactly what a week of Dubai tarmac calls for.
Nothing about the drive rushes you. Off the line the ASX builds speed gradually rather than eagerly, so merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road wants a proper gap rather than a quick dart. Settled at 120 km/h it holds steady and the cabin stays reasonably quiet, though ask for a hard overtake and the CVT climbs revs before the car actually picks up pace, the same trait most CVTs share. It is not a car that rewards enthusiasm. It is a car that behaves the same way every time you ask it to move, which matters more than an extra 20 hp for a first booking in a new city.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Engine | 2.0-litre naturally aspirated 4-cylinder petrol (MIVEC) |

| Seats | 5 |
| Fuel economy | around 8 L/100km combined |
| Fuel tank | 63 litres |
| Range | roughly 550 to 600 km of mixed Dubai driving |
| Boot | 358 litres |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4,355 x 1,810 x 1,625 mm |
| Ground clearance | about 195 mm |
| Power | 150 hp / 197 Nm |

The boot holds 358 litres, which in real terms means one large suitcase and a couple of soft bags with room to spare, or a full week's grocery run without folding anything down. Two hard-shell cases for a DXB or DWC airport pickup is tighter work. Drop the rear seats and both go in without a fight, or keep one case in the boot and rest the second on the back seat next to a light passenger.
Up front, two adults get a slightly raised, comfortable seating position, which is most of the reason people choose a small SUV over a hatchback in the first place. The back seat suits two adults on an ordinary trip, or two kids with a booster between them, without complaint. Squeeze in a third adult and legroom becomes the limiting factor fast, fine for a short hop across town, not for a longer drive. At 4,355 mm long the ASX still threads into tighter multi-storey bays and mall ramps than a mid-size SUV would, and ground clearance of about 195 mm shrugs off speed bumps and steep driveway ramps. It rides on standard road tyres though, so treat that clearance as a city advantage rather than an invitation onto sand.
Combined fuel economy runs around 8 L/100km, closer to 9 in stop-start city traffic and closer to 7 once you are holding a steady highway speed. The 63-litre tank turns that into roughly 550 to 600 km of mixed Dubai driving before you need a pump, usually one stop across a normal week's use.
The mileage allowance on this ASX is 250 km a day, with anything beyond that billed at AED 0.5 per extra kilometre. A day that mixes an airport pickup, a few errands through town and a drive back to the marina rarely climbs past 100 km, so ordinary use leaves plenty of room. It gets tighter on a genuine day trip. A return run to Abu Dhabi covers close to 280 km on its own, which pushes past the daily cap even before you add any local driving that day, though at AED 0.5 a kilometre the overage is not a painful number, just one worth planning around rather than discovering on the invoice. Minimum age to take the keys is 21, one of the lower bars you will find on an SUV in this class, and child seats are required for anyone under four.
Cabin size works in your favour on a hot afternoon. There is not much air to cool, so the AC gets ahead of the heat fairly quickly once you are moving. The first minute after climbing back into an ASX that has sat parked at 45 degrees is still rough, the same as almost anything this size, so crack a window before you get in if you can manage it. Salik tolls and any RTA fines picked up during the rental are the renter's responsibility, same as with every car handed over here.
Book the ASX 2022 if you are 21 or over and want a compact SUV that does not add conditions on top of the usual paperwork, one that carries two adults and a case comfortably, seats two kids in the back with a booster, and covers a normal city week inside its daily mileage without you watching the odometer. The lower age gate is the real reason to pick this one over a rival that quietly requires 25.
Size up if you are regularly carrying four adults with full luggage, or you want more shove for confident overtaking on the highway. A mid-size SUV like the Outlander handles both with less strain. Size down if it is one person running light errands around the city, since a compact hatch does the job for less rental and less fuel, and you will not miss the extra ride height. For a younger renter or a small group who wants SUV space without an age restriction getting in the way, the ASX 2022 is the practical, low-drama pick.
