Most economy SUVs ask you to accept slow in exchange for cheap. The MG ZS 2025 doesn't, and that's the reason to look at it. We rent it across Dubai with 250 km a day included and no charge on the kilometres after that, so a week of running around rarely costs you extra. The headline is the engine: a 1.4-litre turbo petrol making 156 hp, which is a lot of muscle for a small five-seat crossover at this rate. That changes the whole pitch. This page is about whether that turbo and the easy parking are worth more to you than outright cabin space, because on space the ZS is honest rather than huge.
The turbo is the part you feel first. With 156 hp and a six-speed automatic, the ZS pulls away from a standstill with real intent, and it gets to highway speed without the strained, droning effort that defines most cars in this bracket. Around 9.8 seconds to 100 km/h is brisk for an economy SUV, and on Sheikh Zayed Road that matters more than the number suggests. Slotting into a fast lane on the E11 or overtaking a slow truck near the airport is a quick, confident move rather than a planned event.
It drives the front wheels, the steering is light, and the ride is set up for comfort over corners. None of that is a flaw for Dubai use. You're not buying it to attack a mountain pass; you're buying it to feel unbothered on a motorway with the AC at full and three people aboard, and on that test it holds up better than its price tag implies.

A small turbo is efficient when you're gentle and thirstier when you use the performance, so be realistic. Drive it the way most renters do, around town with the AC working hard, and you'll see roughly 13 to 14 km per litre. The catch is the 45-litre tank, which is on the smaller side. That gives you somewhere around 550 to 600 km of city driving before a refill, so on a busy week of cross-town errands and a couple of airport runs, plan on filling up once, maybe twice if you're commuting daily between the far suburbs and DXB. Fuel here is cheap, so the cost stays low even when you lean on the turbo.
The boot is the honest part of this car. You get 359 litres with the rear seats up, which is fine for a couple flying in for a week: two large suitcases stand up behind the seats with a soft bag wedged alongside. Drop the rear bench and it opens to around 1166 litres, plenty for a flat-pack run or a full grocery haul. The limit is the four-adults-with-luggage trip. Fill all five seats and the boot is back to carry-on territory, so a group heading to the airport with full check-in cases should size up to a sedan with a proper trunk. The ZS gives you SUV height and a usable boot, not a load-lugger.
At 4.32 metres long the ZS is easy to place. Tight multi-storey bays around the Marina, steep mall ramps, and the usual run of U-turns are all straightforward, and the raised seat helps you judge the corners. The 145 mm of ground clearance is modest, so it'll clear standard speed bumps without drama but you'll want to take the sharper basement ramps and aggressive humps slowly rather than charging them. This is a road crossover, so leave soft sand and dune tracks to a proper 4x4.
Cooling is the test that decides a Dubai rental, and the ZS does the job. Park it in open sun at 45 degrees and the cabin bakes within minutes, as anything does here. The front vents are strong and the modest cabin volume means it comes down to comfortable within a few minutes once you're moving. Check whether the rear vents are working when we hand it over if you're carrying kids in the back regularly, because in this class the second row sometimes leans on air pushed through from the front.
A couple of Dubai practicalities. Salik tolls run on your account as you pass the gantries, and any RTA fines during the rental pass to you. Seat belts are mandatory in every seat and a child seat is required for under-fours, which we can fit. Worth knowing before you set off.
Rent the MG ZS 2025 if you want a small SUV that actually feels quick, parks easily, and comes with generous mileage and a flexible spread of payment options. For a solo driver or a couple doing city runs, highway stints and airport pickups, the turbo lifts it well clear of the slow-and-cheap crowd it's priced against. Size up to a sedan or a larger SUV if you regularly carry four adults with full luggage, since the boot is the one place this car asks you to compromise. For the renter who values pace and ease over outright space, though, this is one of the more rewarding economy buys we hand over.
