The booking we take most often for this car is the visiting family week. Someone living here has relatives landing at DXB late on a Thursday with four big cases between them, and they need one vehicle that carries the people and the luggage in a single trip. That is the job the MG ZS 2024 does well in Dubai, and we can have it at your door within one to two hours, so a flight confirmed at short notice is not a problem. It is an economy SUV with five seats and a boot that is bigger than the rate suggests. Whether that boot and those seats cover your week is what the rest of this page is for.

The trolley test at arrivals

448 litres behind the rear seats is the number that keeps this car booked ahead of hatchbacks costing the same. Practically, that swallows two 28-inch cases laid flat with space above them for backpacks, a pushchair or the duty free, or three medium cases if you stand them on edge and accept losing the parcel shelf. The tailgate opening is wide and the load floor is low for an SUV, so a heavy case goes in with a lift rather than a hoist, which matters at one in the morning after a long flight.

Where it stops is five people and five full-size checked bags. That combination does not fit in any car at this price, and anyone telling you otherwise has not tried it. With four aboard you are fine. With five, plan on one bag riding on a lap, and if that is your regular pattern, size up to a seven-seater and use the third row for luggage. Folding the rear bench opens up roughly 1,100 litres, which is the version of the car you want for a flat-pack collection.

Five seats, and how honest that number is

The 2,585 mm wheelbase is generous for a car only 4,314 mm long, and it shows in the second row. An adult of average height sits behind another adult without negotiating, which is not true of every small SUV. Headroom is good too, because the roofline stays high at 1,624 mm rather than sloping away for style.

The middle rear seat is the usual compromise, narrower and firmer than the outer two, so three adults across is fine for a run into Downtown and starts to grate on the drive out to Abu Dhabi. Two adults plus a child seat is the arrangement that works all week. Two child seats fit properly, and three across is possible only with narrow seats and patience.

Heat is where a full car changes the maths. One person in a ZS parked in the July sun gets a comfortable cabin in about three or four minutes, because the volume of air is small and the front vents push hard. Load five bodies in and that stretches out. Drop the windows for the first block of driving so the trapped hot air leaves instead of being recirculated, and park nose-out under cover where you can.

Seven days of fuel, kilometres and Salik

MG claims 14.1 km per litre. Nobody gets that here, and we would rather say so than repeat a brochure number at you. Realistic Dubai driving, meaning stop-start traffic with the AC working hard and the car carrying passengers, lands nearer 10 to 11 km per litre. On the 48-litre tank that is somewhere around 500 km of genuine city range, so a normal week of school runs, errands and one airport trip means filling up once, maybe twice.

Mileage is unlikely to be what costs you. Our rate includes 300 km a day, and a Dubai week spent between home, the malls and the airport rarely gets close to that. Past it, extra kilometres run at AED 0.5 each, which only becomes a real number if you are driving to Abu Dhabi daily. Salik bills to your account each time you pass a gantry, any RTA fine issued during the rental is yours, and children under four need a proper child seat, which we will fit before delivery if you tell us in advance.

Ramps, mirrors and the fast lane

Loaded, the ZS still parks easily. It is 1,809 mm wide with upright glass and a short bonnet, so tight bays in older Marina towers and second-basement mall parking take one clean attempt. What you do have to adjust for is a full boot. With cases stacked to the parcel shelf your rear view goes, so the mirrors do the reversing, and it pays to set them properly before you leave the airport rather than in the dark of a car park.

164 mm of clearance handles community speed humps and the lip at the top of a mall ramp without the scrape a low sedan gives you, and that is the useful limit of the SUV part. Front-wheel drive only means sand and unsealed tracks are not this car's business, whatever the ride height implies.

On the highway you feel the four-speed automatic, which is a ratio or two short of most rivals. Cruising at 120 on the E11 is calm enough, but a sudden overtake with five people and their luggage aboard is not, because the gearbox has a long way to drop before the 113 hp does anything useful. Commit early and leave yourself room and it never becomes an issue.

Book it if this is your week

Rent the MG ZS 2024 if you need one economy car to move a family of four or five around the city with real luggage, and you would rather spend the money on boot space than on acceleration. For airport runs, school runs and mall trips it is one of the easiest cars in the class to live with, and the 448-litre boot is the strongest argument on the spec sheet.

Choose something else if your days are spent overtaking on the E11, or if you regularly carry five adults with five full cases. A turbocharged rival like the Geely Coolray feels quicker and has the nicer cabin and screen, though it gives up a lot of boot to do it. For the visiting-family week that most people book this car for, the ZS is the right trade.
