The MG ZS 2023 is the cheapest route into a five-seat SUV in Dubai's rental fleets, and that is really the whole pitch. It rents for noticeably less than a Creta or a Seltos while still giving you the raised driving position, the five-door boot and the easy automatic gearbox that make people choose an SUV over a hatchback in the first place. We get it to your door in one to two hours, and there is nothing complicated about the handover. What you are actually weighing here is not one SUV's features against another's. It is price against polish, and this page works out where that trade pays off for a week or a month around the city.
MG sells the ZS in this older shape with a single naturally aspirated 1.5-litre four in the GCC, no turbo option was offered on this body style, so what you get is what you get. It makes 118 hp, sent to the front wheels through a CVT automatic, and it is tuned for smooth, unhurried progress rather than any sense of urgency. Around town, off the lights and through the tight loops of a Marina car park, that suits the car fine. It pulls away cleanly and never feels strained at 60 or 80 km/h.
Take it onto Sheikh Zayed Road loaded with people and bags and the picture changes. The CVT holds a high note while the engine gathers itself, so a confident overtake needs a bit more lead time than you would give a torquier car. That is not a flaw so much as the nature of a budget SUV's engine, and it is honestly no different from most naturally aspirated rivals in this price band. For the school run, mall trips and the odd airport pickup, which is most of what a rental actually does in a week, the 1.5 gets on with the job without drama.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Engine | 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol, naturally aspirated |
| Power | 118 hp |
| Transmission | CVT automatic |
| Drive | Front-wheel drive |
| Seats | 5 |
| Fuel economy | Around 6.5 L/100km combined |
| Fuel tank | 45 litres |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4,314 x 1,809 x 1,624 mm |
| Colour | Black |
This is the older, shorter ZS shape, MG lengthened the car for the redesign that followed, so go in expecting a genuinely compact footprint rather than a mid-size SUV pretending to be small. At 4,314 mm long it is close to a supermini in overall length despite the taller body, which makes it an easy fit for tight tower bays and multi-storey mall parking where a bigger crossover has to shuffle. The boot takes one large case and a soft bag comfortably. Push for two full-size cases plus carry-ons for a DXB run and you will be working the folding rear seats, because this shape simply has less cargo room behind the back row than the current ZS.
Inside, two adults sit fine up front and the raised seating gives the view over traffic that people rent an SUV for. The back seat handles two adults for normal trips or a couple of kids and their bags for the school run without complaint. Put a fourth adult back there with everyone's luggage for a long airport transfer and it gets tight, which is the honest limit of a compact SUV this size. Ground clearance sits in the same range as most cars in this class, enough to clear a Dubai speed bump or a steep mall ramp without scraping, but this is a front-wheel-drive road car. Point it at Hatta or a dune track and it will not thank you.
MG quotes combined economy around 6.5 litres per 100 km for the 1.5, and that number holds up reasonably well in real driving as long as you are not fighting traffic all day with the AC on full blast. A week of ordinary Dubai commuting and errands, with the 45-litre tank, usually means one stop at the pump, maybe two if you are driving in from further out. The rental allowance on this car is 250 km a day, and anything past that is billed at AED 0.5 per kilometre, which covers city life easily but is worth watching if you are planning a day trip out of town. Salik tolls and any RTA fines are the renter's responsibility, standard across the fleet, and you need to be 25 to take the keys on this one.
The cabin cools the way you would expect from a compact SUV of this generation. The front vents pull a baked interior down quickly once you are moving, and because the cabin is not large there is less air to chill than in a bigger SUV. This older shape was not sold in the GCC with the rear AC vents MG later added to the redesigned car, so back-seat passengers are relying on air pushed through from the front rather than a dedicated outlet of their own. Parking in shade when you can makes more difference here than in a car with vents built into the back of the console. The materials around you are plain rather than plush, which is exactly where the lower price comes from.
Rent the MG ZS 2023 if the budget matters more than the badge. A couple or a small family doing city errands, school runs and the occasional airport pickup gets everything they actually need here, at a rate that undercuts a Creta or a Seltos by a real margin. It is also a sensible pick if you just want SUV height and an automatic gearbox without paying for features you would not use during a short Dubai stay.
Pay up for a mainstream name, a Kicks, a Creta, a Seltos, if you want a bigger boot for regular airport runs, rear AC vents for kids on hot afternoons, or a cabin that feels a notch more finished under your hands. If you are set on staying with MG but want the newer shape's extra space and kit, the redesigned ZS is worth asking about, though it rents at a different rate. For a short city-focused week where cost is the deciding factor, though, this older ZS does the job it is priced to do.
