Most Dubai rental SUVs cap your driving by the day and reset the counter every morning. The MG ZS 2023 works differently: this compact SUV comes with 5,000 km built into the whole rental, not per day, and the extra-km charge of AED 0.5 only applies once you're past that total. Spread over a week or a month of ordinary driving, that pooled allowance covers more ground than it first looks like it will. We get the car to your door in one to two hours of booking, no counter visit needed. The real question is whether that mileage deal, plus a cabin sized for real Dubai errands, adds up to a car worth booking over a more familiar badge.

The mileage deal, and what it's worth

A daily cap sounds generous until you actually drive it. Most compact SUVs in this class limit you to 200 or 250 km a day and reset that number every morning, so a quiet Tuesday's unused kilometres are gone by Wednesday. The ZS pools the whole 5,000 km across the length of the booking instead. Rent it for a week and that works out to roughly 700 km a day if you used every one of them, which almost nobody does on ordinary city driving. Keep it for a month and the same 5,000 km settles closer to 165 km a day, still comfortable for commuting but worth watching if the month includes a couple of long weekend drives. Go past the total and the rate is AED 0.5 per extra kilometre, in line with what most rivals charge once you're over their daily figure, except here you've had the whole booking to use it rather than losing it a day at a time. For a week split between the office, the school run and one trip out to Hatta, the pooled total is the more forgiving arrangement.

Boot, back seat and the daily load

This is the pre-facelift ZS, the smaller-bodied shape MG sold in the GCC before the 2025 redesign added length and width. At 4,314 mm long and 1,809 mm wide, it sits closer to a tall hatchback than a mid-size crossover, which makes it easy to place in a Marina tower's parking level or a mall's multi-storey without three-point turns. MG hasn't published a separate boot figure for this older shape, and dealer listings suggest it trails the facelifted car's 448-litre boot by a real margin, so plan on one large case and a soft bag rather than a full family's luggage. The back seat holds two adults comfortably for a day out, or three kids across for the school run. Add a fourth adult and a boot full of cases for a DXB or DWC transfer and knees start meeting the front seatbacks, which is the honest limit of a compact SUV this size, not a flaw specific to this car. Ground clearance isn't separately confirmed for this shape either, but in daily use it clears standard speed bumps and steep mall ramps without drama. It's still a front-wheel-drive road car on regular tyres, so treat Hatta's paved road as fine and leave its dirt tracks to something built for them.

Fuel stops, tolls and cooling the cabin

Under the bonnet is MG's naturally aspirated 1.5-litre four, 118 hp and around 150 Nm, sent to the front wheels through a CVT automatic. It's an easygoing engine around town, pulling away from lights without fuss and holding pace through roundabouts and school-run traffic. Point it at Sheikh Zayed Road loaded up, though, and it needs more room to build speed than a turbocharged rival would. This pre-facelift shape was never sold with a turbo option in the GCC, so plan your overtakes rather than expect a shove of torque. MG quotes combined economy around 6.5 L/100km, and on the 45-litre tank that's a theoretical range near 690 km, though Dubai stop-start traffic with the AC working hard brings the real figure down. Even so, one stop at the pump usually covers a normal week of errands and commuting.

Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental fall to the renter, standard across the fleet, and you'll need to be 25 to collect the keys on this one. Seat belts are mandatory in every seat, and a child seat is required for anyone under four.

The front vents pull a baked cabin down quickly once you're moving, which is what actually matters after a car has sat in a parking structure at 45 degrees. This older shape predates the rear AC vents MG added to the facelifted ZS, so back-seat passengers rely on air pushed through from the front rather than an outlet of their own. For two adults up front that's not an issue. With kids in the back on a summer afternoon, point the front vents toward them and give the cabin a minute of driving before judging it too warm.

Who should rent it, and who should size up

Rent the MG ZS 2023 if your booking runs long enough that a pooled mileage allowance actually pays off, a week that mixes commuting with a weekend trip, or a month where the odd long drive shouldn't mean tracking kilometres daily. It also suits a couple or small family doing ordinary city errands and school runs, since the smaller body parks easier than most SUVs in its class and the running costs stay low throughout.

Size up if you need four adults with full luggage for a regular airport run, or rear AC vents for kids in the back through a Dubai summer, since this earlier shape doesn't have a confirmed set. A Kicks, a Creta or a Seltos will carry more in both the boot and the back seat, and a name most renters recognise without asking questions, at a price that reflects it. If you want the newer ZS shape's extra space or the turbo engine MG added for 2025, that's a different car and a different rate. For a straightforward compact SUV that turns a generous mileage allowance into real savings over a longer stay, this one still does the job.
