MG gives the back seats some recline and enough legroom for an adult on a cross-town hop, and children will ride there happily all week. For a long haul to Abu Dhabi with grown-ups in the very back it gets tight, as almost anything does at this size and price.

Luggage is the honest catch. With all seven seats up, the space behind the third row swallows soft bags and a grocery run, not a full set of hard cases. Fold that back row down and it opens into a 1,026-litre five-seat load bay that takes a family's week of cases easily. The squeeze only bites on the day you need every seat and full airport luggage at once, which for most trips is rare.

Running a big turbo SUV for a week

Under the bonnet is MG's 2.0-litre turbo four, good for 234 hp and 350 Nm through a nine-speed automatic. That's enough to move a loaded seven-seater without fuss. It pulls away cleanly and sits at 120 on Sheikh Zayed Road quiet and settled, though a full-house overtake wants a moment's planning rather than a stab at the pedal. Comfortable cruiser, not a quick one.

One thing to be straight about is drive. The base RX9 is front-wheel drive, and higher versions add all-wheel drive, but neither is built for soft sand. There's no low-range gearing, and the setup is tuned for tarmac and the odd loose track. If your week includes real dune driving, this is the wrong car, and a body-on-frame 4x4 like a Fortuner or Patrol is what you want.

Fuel stays cheap to feed for something this big. MG claims around 9 litres per 100 km, and real Dubai driving, all traffic lights and AC on full, runs closer to 11 or 12 with a full cabin. The 70-litre tank still gives a useful range, so a week of school runs and mall trips means a couple of visits to the pump, no more.

Mileage is the number to check before you book. The daily allowance is 250 km, plenty for ordinary family life across the city. Past that it's AED 0.5 per extra kilometre, so a full day out to the east coast and back is worth a quick sum first. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are yours, as with every car we hand over, and child seats are required for under-fours.

Keeping a three-row cabin cold in summer

Dubai summers push into the high 40s, and a seven-seat cabin is a lot of air to cool once the car has baked in an open car park. The front vents are strong and bring the first two rows down to comfortable quickly. Getting cold air all the way to the third row takes longer, simply because there's more cabin to work through, though the rear vents help feed the back. On the worst afternoons the routine is the same as with any big SUV here: start it, let it run a few minutes, then load everyone once the heat is off the seats. Park in shade or a basement when you can. It won't pamper you like a luxury climate system, but for moving a full family through July it copes.

Who this MG suits, and who should look elsewhere
