The MG RX8 2023 is a near five-metre SUV that seats seven and sits tall in traffic, yet it books at economy-car money, which is the whole reason to consider it for a Dubai week. We rent it here and bring it to your door in one to two hours, with no deposit needed at handover. What it isn't is a luxury cruiser or a desert tool. This page settles one question: whether a large, cheap, road-biased seven-seater is right for your week, or whether your money is better spent sizing up or down.

Seven seats, three rows, and the boot

The RX8's pitch is space. It's a genuine seven-seater, laid out two up front, three in the middle and two in the back, and because the body stretches close to five metres the cabin doesn't feel pinched the way a compact three-row does. The middle row is the sweet spot. It's wide, seats three children or two adults without complaint, and slides to trade legroom with the row behind.

The third row is usable, which not every seven-seater can claim. Kids ride back there happily, and an adult will manage a cross-town hop once the middle bench slides forward. For a long run to Abu Dhabi with grown-ups in the back it gets tight, as it does in almost anything at this size and price. Treat the last row as proper seating for short trips and occasional space for adults, and it delivers.

Luggage is the honest caveat, though it's less brutal here than in a small MPV. With all seven seats up, the space behind the third row takes soft bags and the weekly shop rather than a full set of hard cases, but the long rear overhang leaves more room back there than a compact rival would. Fold the third row and it becomes a big, square five-seat load bay that swallows a family's cases for a week. The compromise only bites on the rare day you need every seat and full luggage at once.

On the road, and where it isn't at home

Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre turbo four making 220 hp and 360 Nm through a six-speed automatic. That's enough to move a big body without drama. It pulls away cleanly and sits at 120 on Sheikh Zayed Road relaxed and quiet, though a loaded overtake with seven aboard wants a little planning rather than a jab of the throttle. This is a comfortable cruiser, not a quick one.

Two honest notes before you picture it on a dune. Depending on the version, the RX8 is rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, but even the all-wheel-drive setup is built for wet roads and loose gravel, not soft sand. There's no low-range gearing and the ride is road-tuned. If your week includes real desert work, this is the wrong car, and a Fortuner or Patrol is what you want. The clearance, around 200 mm, is plenty for speed bumps, mall ramps and the odd rough track, and that height is where it pays you back.

Size shows up when you park. At nearly five metres long and 1.93 wide, it fills a lane and needs the whole bay. Tight Marina tower ramps and older multi-storey slots ask for the camera and a bit of patience, so if your days are all narrow downtown parking, factor that in. On the open road that size works for you, giving a planted, big-car feel.

What a week costs to run

Fuel first. The claimed figure is about 10 litres per 100 km, but real Dubai driving, all traffic lights and the AC flat out, runs closer to 12 or 13 with a full cabin. The 70-litre tank still gives a useful range between fills, so a week of school runs and mall trips means a couple of visits to the pump, no more. Petrol is cheap here, and a big SUV that drinks like this stays affordable to feed.

Mileage is the number to check before you book. The daily allowance is 250 km, which covers ordinary family life across the city with room to spare. Go past it and it's AED 0.5 per extra kilometre, so a full day out to the east coast and back is worth a quick sum first. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are yours, as with every car we hand over, and child seats are required for under-fours, worth arranging up front with a full house of kids.

Cooling a big cabin in July

Dubai summers push into the high 40s, and a seven-seat cabin is a lot of air to chill after the car has sat in an open car park. The front vents are strong and pull the first two rows down to comfortable quickly. Getting cold air all the way to the third row takes longer, simply because there's more cabin to work through, though the rear vents help feed the back. On the hottest afternoons the trick is the same as with any big SUV here: start it, let it run a few minutes, and load everyone in once the worst of the heat has gone. Park in shade or a basement when you can. It's no luxury climate system, but for moving a full family through the summer it copes.

Who should rent it, and who should look elsewhere

Rent the RX8 if you need to move seven people in something big and comfortable without paying big-SUV money. Large families, visiting relatives, a group that would otherwise split across two cars: this is a lot of metal and seat for the rate, and the tall driving position and long-legged cruising make it easy to live with for a week.

Look elsewhere in two cases. If your trip is built around real off-road driving, the road-biased chassis and missing low range will let you down, so step up to a proper body-on-frame 4x4. And if you want plush refinement and a polished cabin, a Kia Sorento or Hyundai Santa Fe rents for more but feels a class above inside. If you're honestly only ever four or five people on smooth city roads, size down to a five-seat crossover that's cheaper to rent and far easier to park.
