Need room for seven and a high seat without paying premium-badge money? We rent the MG RX8 2023 across Dubai, dropped to your door inside one to two hours, with 250 km a day built into the rate before any extra-kilometre charge applies. That daily allowance matters here, because a big body-on-frame SUV tends to get used: school run, mall haul, a weekend out toward Hatta. The RX8's whole case is space and presence for the price of a mid-size crossover, so the real question is whether a large family hauler suits your week better than something smaller and softer.
This is a full-size, seven-seat SUV built on a ladder frame rather than a car platform. It's nearly five metres long, sits tall, and gives you the commanding view people size up for in the first place. The 2.0-litre turbo four sends 220 horsepower through an automatic gearbox to all four wheels, and MG quotes 0 to 100 km/h in 9.1 seconds. That's brisk enough for a vehicle this size, though you feel the weight when you ask for a sudden overtake.
The badge is the part renters worry about, and on a rental it barely registers. You're not living with resale value or a long warranty. You're driving it for a week. What you notice instead is the room and the ride character, and those are where the RX8 earns or loses you.

For five people the RX8 is generous. Three rows mean you can carry seven, but be honest about the third row: it's proper for kids and short hops, tighter for adults on a longer run. The way most families use it is two adults up front, kids in the middle, and the back row folded flat for a real boot. With all seven seats up, luggage space shrinks to hand-bag territory, so for an airport pickup with seven people and their cases you'll be choosing between passengers and suitcases.
Fold that third row and the picture changes completely. Now you've got a long, flat load floor that swallows a full week of mall runs, a pram, and several large cases at once. That flexibility is the point of buying this much length. If your group is five or fewer, you get a huge boot and a comfortable cabin, and the RX8 makes a lot of sense.
A tall cabin this size is slower to cool than a small hatch, and Dubai will test it. Park it through a 45-degree afternoon and the first minute is unpleasant whatever you drive. The RX8 helps itself with vents for all three rows, so the kids in the back aren't left baking while the front gets the cold air. Drop the windows for the first thirty seconds to dump the worst of the heat, then let it settle, and within a few minutes it's comfortable front to back. For a family vehicle the rear airflow is the spec that actually counts, and this one has it.
On Sheikh Zayed Road the RX8 cruises happily and the high seat makes long highway stretches easy. Stability at speed is fine; just remember a two-tonne ladder-frame SUV stops and changes direction less eagerly than a car, so leave more space. The trade-off for that rugged underbody is ride quality. On broken tarmac and over speed bumps it feels firmer and busier than a car-based crossover, which is normal for this kind of construction and worth knowing before you book.
Parking takes thought. At nearly five metres it won't tuck into tight Marina bays or older multi-storey slots the way a compact does, and U-turns need a wider sweep. The high view and light steering help, and the clearance of 202 mm means mall ramps and speed bumps pass without scraping. For DXB or DWC runs it's a strong airport vehicle, with the caveat above about seats versus suitcases when you're full.
Plan to refuel. A heavy body-on-frame SUV with a turbo four pulling all four wheels isn't economical, and a week of city driving in this will see the pumps more often than a small car would. The 68-litre tank gives sensible range, but stop-start traffic and the AC running flat out both eat into it, so don't expect hatchback figures.
A few Dubai basics. Salik tolls run on your rental account, and any RTA fine during the hire passes to you, so keep to the limits. Seatbelts are required in every seat, and children under four need a proper child seat, which matters more in a seven-seater carrying a full family.
The all-wheel drive and 202 mm of clearance make the RX8 capable on graded desert tracks, beach approaches, and the easier stuff around Hatta. It'll handle a firm sand road or a rough trail without drama. What it isn't is a low-range, locked-diff dune machine. For soft-sand bashing and serious off-road you want a proper body-on-frame 4x4 with the hardware for it. Treat the RX8 as a comfortable family SUV with useful light off-road ability, and it won't let you down.
Rent the RX8 if you're a family of five to seven who wants maximum space, a high commanding view, and rugged underpinnings without paying premium-badge money, and you're mostly on tarmac with the odd easy track. It's a sensible large hauler for the rate. Pick something else in two cases. If comfort on Dubai's roads is your priority and you don't need seven seats, a car-based crossover rides better and parks easier. If you're heading into real dunes, rent a serious 4x4 instead. For the everyday job of moving a big family around Dubai for a week, the RX8 gives you more metal and more room than almost anything near its price.
