Mg HS 2023 - start from 266 AED / day

A family-sized cabin without the family-badge price is the easy way to sum up the MG HS 2023, and we rent it across Dubai with 250 km a day built into the rate, enough to cover a week of school runs, mall trips and the odd airport pickup without watching the odometer. This is a compact SUV that gives you the room and the kit of cars costing far more, which is exactly the argument for renting one here. The brand is less familiar than a Toyota or a Nissan, but on a rental that barely matters. What matters is the space, the equipment and how it behaves on a Dubai week, and on those points the HS holds up well.

How much car you actually get

The HS is a genuine compact SUV, not a jacked-up hatchback pretending to be one. At 4574 mm long and 1876 mm wide, the cabin is one of the roomier ones in its class. Four adults sit comfortably, and the back seat has the leg and head room that taller passengers notice straight away. The boot takes two large cases and a couple of soft bags with the rear seats up, and folding them flat opens up the kind of space that handles a Carrefour run for the whole household.

Inside, the HS feels a step above its price. You get a large central touchscreen, a digital driver display, soft-touch materials in the places your hands land, and a level of standard kit that used to belong to pricier badges. For a renter, that means the car feels nice to sit in for a week, not just adequate.

The turbo: smooth, not quick

The 1.5-litre turbo makes 162 hp through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, and the character is smooth rather than fast. Nine point nine seconds to 100 is fine, not thrilling. Around town the gearbox can feel slightly hesitant from a standstill, then settles once you're moving. On Sheikh Zayed Road it cruises happily and has enough in reserve to complete an overtake without drama, though it's working harder than the badge of a bigger engine would suggest. Treat it as a relaxed family SUV and it's pleasant. Push it for hot-hatch response and you'll be disappointed.

One thing to be clear about: the HS we rent is front-wheel drive only. There's no all-wheel-drive, no low range, nothing for soft sand. It's built for tarmac. If your week includes a desert camp or Hatta trails off the asphalt, this isn't the car. For everything paved, it's well suited.

Living with it in the heat

Dubai summers push into the high 40s, and a car parked outside at midday turns into an oven. The HS pulls a hot cabin down at a reasonable pace from the front vents, and there are rear vents too, so passengers in the back aren't left baking while the front cools first. It's not a luxury climate system, but for a family car it does the job. Park in shade where you can and the first few minutes are far kinder.

Parking, ramps and the daily grind

At under 4.6 metres it's an easy SUV to place. Marina towers and mall multi-storeys with tight bays and steep ramps don't intimidate it, and the visibility plus the rear camera make reversing into a snug spot straightforward. Ground clearance is 145 mm, which is normal compact-SUV territory. It clears Dubai's speed bumps and mall ramp lips without scraping under normal loading, though a fully packed car taking a sharp ramp deserves the usual care. It's tall enough to see over traffic, small enough to thread through it.

Fuel and the cost of a week

Official combined economy is 7.7 L/100 km. In real Dubai use, with the AC fighting the heat and a fair share of stop-start traffic, expect closer to 9 to 10. The 55-litre tank then gives you roughly 600 km between fills, so on a normal week of city driving and a couple of longer runs you're filling up once, maybe twice. With petrol cheap here, the weekly fuel bill stays modest, and the 250 km a day included in the rate is plenty for most renters.

The Dubai rules worth knowing

A few things sit with the renter, not us. Salik tolls are on your account as you pass the gantries, and any RTA fines from your driving come back to you, so keep an eye on the speed limits, which the cameras enforce closely. Seat belts are mandatory in every seat, and children under four need a proper child seat, which we can fit on request.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the MG HS if you want a roomy, well-equipped family SUV for a Dubai week and you'd rather put your money into space and kit than into a badge. A couple with kids, or four adults doing city runs, airport trips on the E11 to DXB or DWC, and weekend mall outings, will get a comfortable, easy week out of it for noticeably less than the established names cost.

Skip it in two cases. If resale-grade brand familiarity matters to you, or you simply prefer a known crossover like a RAV4 or a Tucson, that comfort is worth paying for and you should book one. And if your group is five or six with a week of luggage, or you've got real off-tarmac plans, size up to a seven-seater or a proper 4x4. For a value-minded family staying on the asphalt, though, the HS is one of the smarter rentals on the lot.
