Rent Mercedes SL 2022 in Dubai

The Mercedes-AMG SL 2022 is the first ground-up redesign of this roadster in more than a decade, and the change that matters most isn't the horsepower number. Mercedes dropped the folding metal roof that defined the last two generations and brought back a proper fabric soft-top, the first cloth roof on an SL since the 1990s. We deliver this one, in silver with the twin-turbo V8 under the bonnet, to your hotel, home or terminal, usually within one to two hours of booking. What this page settles is simpler than the spec sheet: whether a strict two-seat convertible with a small boot and a serious engine fits the week you have planned in Dubai, or whether you should look at something roomier.

The engine, and how it drives

Under the long bonnet sits a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, tuned by AMG to 585 hp and 800 Nm, sent through a nine-speed automatic to all four wheels via 4MATIC+. The claimed 0-100 km/h time is 3.6 seconds, and on Sheikh Zayed Road that means an overtake happens the moment you think about it, not a beat later. The V8 note through the exhaust is deep and a little unhinged at full throttle, which is most of why people book this car over a quieter luxury convertible.

What the SL isn't is a scalpel. This generation is heavier and longer than a Porsche Boxster or a 911 Cabriolet, and Mercedes tuned the chassis for a grand tourer's composure rather than a sports car's darting reflexes. Rear-axle steering sharpens low-speed turns and settles the car at speed, and the all-wheel drive puts the power down cleanly off the line, but you feel the mass through faster direction changes. This is the right character for cruising E11 with the roof down and picking off slower traffic, not for chasing a lap time.

Two seats, and what actually fits with the roof up or down

The SL seats two, full stop. There's no rear bench and no pretending a third person or a child seat squeezes in behind the front chairs. Boot space runs to roughly 213 litres with the roof folded and closer to 240 litres with it raised, enough for one soft weekend bag each, not two hard cases off a DXB flight. Pack light, or plan to check one shared bag between two people.

The fabric roof itself is the generation's real upgrade. It folds in about fifteen seconds and works at up to 60 km/h, so a red light is enough time to drop it, and unlike the old folding hardtop it doesn't eat into the boot once it's stowed. The trade-off worth knowing before you book: ground clearance sits around 86 mm, low even for a sports convertible, so steep mall ramps, the entrance to a Marina tower car park and sharp speed bumps all need a slow, angled approach. Take a ramp at the pace you'd use for a hatchback and you'll hear the front lip complain.

A silver cabin, fuel and running cost

Silver helps here more than the darker colours some rivals get delivered in. It reflects rather than absorbs a Dubai afternoon, so the cabin doesn't bake to quite the same extreme as a black convertible left in the sun. Even so, a small cabin with the roof up after a few hours parked at 45 degrees needs a minute of hard AC before it's comfortable, and the front vents pull the temperature down fast once you're moving. With only two seats to cool, that recovery is quicker than in most of the SUVs on our fleet.

Running cost is the honest catch of a car like this. Official fuel economy sits near 14 litres per 100 km, and a week of Dubai city driving with the AC on and the throttle used the way this engine invites pushes that into the high teens. The 70-litre tank wants premium fuel, so budget for regular stops rather than one fill lasting the week. The included mileage on this rental is 250 km a day, with AED 0.5 for every kilometre over that, and Salik tolls and any RTA fines are the renter's responsibility, same as on every car we hand over.

Who this is for, and when it makes sense

Book the Mercedes-AMG SL 2022 if there are two of you, your luggage fits in a soft bag each, and the plan includes an early morning or a late evening with the roof down on a quiet stretch of coast road or E11. That's the car doing what it was built to do, and the fabric roof and the V8 make the case on their own. You need to be 25 to take the keys, and as a luxury convertible it goes out against a refundable deposit confirmed at booking.

Skip it if the trip involves three or four people, real airport luggage, or long stretches in midday summer traffic where the roof stays up anyway. A GLE or an E-Class Cabriolet carries more and costs less to run, and neither asks you to fold a suitcase into a beach bag to make it fit. The SL isn't trying to be practical. Rent it for the couple of hours a day when Dubai's weather makes an open roof worth having, and it's very hard to beat.
