What you're really renting

The MX-5 is a proper sports car at a sensible rental price, and the joy is in how little it weighs. At just over a tonne, it changes direction the instant you think about it, and the rear-drive balance gives it a liveliness that hot hatches with twice the power never find. The 2.0-litre Skyactiv engine makes 181 hp, which sounds modest until you remember there's so little car to move. The six-speed automatic gets it to 100 km/h in about 7.9 seconds. The sweet spots are early mornings, late evenings, and the cooler stretch from roughly November to March, when an open-top drive along the coast or out toward the desert roads is genuinely the best thing the car does. Luggage, fuel, and the practical stuff

The boot holds enough for a weekend for two, and not much more. One medium case plus a soft bag is realistic. On the road

Sheikh Zayed Road and the E11 are where the trade-off shows. The MX-5 cruises happily and overtakes cleanly, but at speed the cabin is loud and the ride is firm, because it's tuned for corners, not motorway comfort. Where it comes alive is the quieter, flowing roads out of the city, the kind with bends and a horizon. That's the drive worth renting it for.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the MX-5 if you want the pure driving experience and you're travelling as one or two people who pack light.
