Mazda CX-5 2025 - start from 255 AED / day

Some compact SUVs feel like a box on wheels you tolerate for the space. The Mazda CX-5 2025 isn't one of them, and that's the reason we hand it over so often in Dubai. We rent it with 250 km a day included, enough for a week of Marina-to-Downtown errands plus a couple of longer runs without watching the odometer. What it really sells is the drive: steering that talks back, a cabin that feels a class above the badge, and a 2.0-litre automatic that's smooth in traffic and composed at speed. This page is about whether that driving feel is worth picking over outright bulk.

What it's like to actually drive

The CX-5 corners flatter than most SUVs its size. Body roll stays in check through a Marina roundabout, the steering weights up naturally, and you always know where the front wheels are pointing. A lot of compact crossovers feel vague and tall from the driver's seat, so you end up guessing through tight bays. This one doesn't.

The 2.0-litre four-cylinder makes 150 hp and runs through a smooth automatic to the front wheels. It's front-wheel drive, so this is a road car, not a dune machine. On Sheikh Zayed Road it pulls cleanly to overtaking speed and settles into a quiet, planted cruise. Nought to 100 takes 8.9 seconds, brisk enough that merging onto the E11 is never a white-knuckle moment. Push hard from low revs and it asks for a downshift before it really moves, but for normal Dubai driving it has the measure of the traffic.

The cabin, and why it punches up

This is where the CX-5 earns its keep. The dashboard layout is clean, the materials feel genuinely nice under your hand, and the driving position is low and sorted rather than perched. After a week in it, renters notice the quiet at speed and how little road noise comes through. It's a calmer place to sit in traffic than the price suggests.

Five seats, and the front two are the good ones. Two adults up front and two behind travel comfortably. A third adult in the middle rear works for an airport run but not for a long day out. If you're regularly four adults plus luggage, or you need a third row, this isn't your car.

Will my luggage fit

For a couple or a small family, yes. The boot swallows two large suitcases stood upright with room for a couple of soft bags on top, which covers a typical DXB or DWC arrival. Fold the rear seats and it opens up enough for a flat-pack run or a week of grocery hauls. Where it gets tight is the full house: four people's worth of hard cases plus carry-ons will have you stacking and improvising. For that load, a larger SUV makes more sense.

Heat, cooling and the Dubai summer

We cover this on every car because it's a real question here. Park the CX-5 in the open at 45 degrees and the cabin bakes like any car does. The AC pulls it back to comfortable in a few minutes once you're moving, faster if you crack the windows for the first thirty seconds to dump the worst of the heat. Front cooling is strong, the mid-size cabin doesn't take long, and rear passengers get vents at the back of the centre console, so kids aren't left sweating on a school run. It's an effective system rather than a luxury climate setup, and it does the job through July.

Parking, speed bumps and city size

At a touch over 4.5 metres long it's compact enough for Marina towers and mall multi-storeys without the dread of a full-size SUV. U-turns on the wider roads are easy, and tight bays are manageable thanks to that clear view of the car's corners. Ground clearance is generous for a road SUV, so the speed bumps around residential clusters and the steeper mall ramps don't scrape the nose the way a low sedan does. You sit high enough to see over traffic without feeling like you're driving a van.

Running costs and refuelling

The 2.0-litre is the efficient choice in the range, and in real Dubai use, meaning AC on full and a mix of crawling traffic and highway, you'll see consumption climb above the brochure figure. That's true of every car here in summer. With the 58-litre tank, a week of normal city driving means roughly one fill, maybe a top-up if you're doing daily Abu Dhabi or airport runs. It won't sip fuel like a small hatchback, but for an SUV that drives this well, the trade is fair.

A note on the running side: Salik tolls are billed to you as the renter, and any RTA fines during your rental pass through to you, so keep an eye on the speed cameras on the E11. Seat belts are required in every seat, and children under four need a child seat, which we can fit on request.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the CX-5 if the way a car drives matters to you and you're a couple or a small family who values a quality cabin over maximum space. It's the compact SUV here that doesn't make you choose between practical and pleasant, and on a Dubai mix of city errands and highway runs it's genuinely satisfying rather than just adequate. If your week is four adults with full airport luggage, or you need seven seats, size up to a larger SUV instead. But if it's two or three of you and you'd rather enjoy the drive than haul a wardrobe, this is the one we'd put you in.
