What's under the bonnet, and how it drives

Every 2024 CX-5 in the UAE carries Mazda's KF-generation architecture, the same one that's been on sale since 2017 and is now in its final, most sorted year before Mazda's next-generation CX-5 lands. Under the bonnet is a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre four making 165 hp and 210 Nm, sent to the front wheels through a conventional six-speed automatic. There's no turbo and no hybrid system to complicate a rental fleet car, which is exactly the point: it starts every time, and it's simple to run.

On the road the character is unhurried rather than quick. Overtaking with four people aboard on Sheikh Zayed Road takes a bit of forward planning, but the cabin stays quiet at 120 km/h and the steering has a tidy, settled feel that budget crossovers in this class don't match. The air conditioning is a genuine strength in summer. Point the front vents at yourself after the car's been baking at 45 degrees, and the cabin drops to comfortable within a few minutes, even if the rear vents take a little longer to catch up.

Boot, back seat and the daily load

With the rear seats up the boot holds 442 litres, enough for two large suitcases and a couple of soft bags without stacking anything on the parcel shelf. Fold the rear bench down and the space opens to roughly 1,342 litres, which covers a supermarket run, flatpack furniture, or bikes for a weekend away. It's a proper family boot, not the compromise you get in a compact crossover.

The back seat holds two adults properly, with decent knee room and a floor flat enough that a middle passenger isn't miserable for a short hop. Put three adults back there for a long DXB or DWC transfer with a full boot and it gets tight, which is true of almost every mid-size SUV, not just this one.

At 4.55 metres long the CX-5 asks for a bit more care in tight Marina or Downtown multi-storeys than a small hatchback would, though a reversing camera and sensible mirrors sort most of it. Ground clearance sits just under 200 mm, enough to take speed bumps and steep mall ramps without scraping. It's a front-wheel-drive road car though, not a desert vehicle, so Hatta trails and soft sand aren't its territory.

The mileage math, and why it matters here

Dubai to Abu Dhabi and back is roughly 280 to 300 km depending on where you're headed, which puts you 30 to 50 km over the daily allowance and adds AED 150 to AED 250 to that one day alone. A Hatta run has the same problem. If a road trip like that is on your itinerary, ask about a higher-mileage plan before you book rather than finding out at drop-off.

Running costs otherwise are reasonable. Mazda quotes around 7 L/100km combined for the 2.0-litre, and with the AC working hard in Dubai heat, expect closer to 8 to 9 in real city driving. The 56-litre tank still gets you 600 to 700 km between fill-ups in a normal week. Salik tolls and any RTA fines from the rental period are billed to you as the renter, standard across the fleet, and worth factoring in alongside the fuel.

Who should rent it, and who should size up

Book the CX-5 2024 if your week is mostly Dubai: city errands, school pickups, mall runs, DXB or DWC transfers, and the occasional evening on Sheikh Zayed Road. The cabin, the boot and the ride quality are genuinely better than the budget crossovers it's priced against, and at 250 km a day you'll rarely think about the mileage cap at all. Doorstep delivery in one to two hours means you're driving within minutes of confirming, and the minimum age of 21 opens it up to renters some rivals in this class turn away.

Size up, or pick a different car, if your plan includes repeated long-distance days. One Abu Dhabi trip you can absorb; two or three in a week and the AED 5 per km overage adds up fast, and you're better off asking for a higher-mileage package upfront. And if the plan involves real off-road driving, this front-wheel-drive SUV isn't it. For everything else within the city, it's a comfortable, honest choice.
