Most people who ask us for a compact SUV in Dubai want height and a commanding view without driving something the size of a Land Cruiser. We hand over the Mazda CX-5 2022 to the ones who care how the car feels on the road, not just how tall it sits in the mall car park. It rents across Dubai with doorstep delivery in one to two hours, so you can have it outside your building or at the terminal before your patience runs out. This is the compact SUV to pick for steering and cabin quality. If you need seven seats or a cavernous boot, it isn't the one.
The CX-5 has always been the driver's choice in this class. The 2.0-litre petrol makes 150 horsepower through a smooth automatic and the front wheels, and it gets to 100 km/h in about 8.9 seconds. That's not quick, but the numbers undersell it. The steering is honest, the body stays flat through a fast slip road, and the cabin is quieter and better finished than the badge price suggests. For a week of Sheikh Zayed Road commuting and weekend runs, it's the calmest car in its bracket.
| Spec | Figure |
|---|---|
| Engine | 2.0-litre petrol, 150 hp |
| Transmission | Automatic |
| Drive | Front-wheel drive |
| Seats | 5 |
| Fuel tank | 58 litres |
| Combined economy | around 7 L/100 km |
| Range (mixed driving) | roughly 800 km per tank |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4575 x 1845 x 1684 mm |
| Ground clearance | 193 mm |
| Boot (seats up) | 442 litres |
| 0 to 100 km/h | 8.9 seconds |
Read the table as reference, not a verdict. The figures that decide your rental are the boot, the clearance, and the tank, and each one earns a sentence below.
The 442-litre boot is honest for the class. Two large hard cases and a couple of soft bags go in flat for an airport run, with room for a backpack on top. Fold the rear bench and you open up a long, near-flat floor that swallows a bike with the front wheel off or a fortnight of furniture-shop boxes. Where it runs short is people plus their stuff at the same time. Load five adults and you're down to carry-ons and shopping, not check-in suitcases. A family of four with a week of cases is comfortable. Add a fifth adult and their luggage and you want a bigger boot or a sedan with a deeper trunk.
Dubai summers sit in the high 40s, and a CX-5 left in open sun gets as hot inside as anything else. The good news is the cabin is on the smaller side for the segment, so the air conditioning has less air to fight. Start it, set it low, and the front vents pull the temperature down to bearable within a couple of minutes, fully comfortable inside about five. There are rear vents at the back of the centre console, which matters if you're carrying kids on the school run or passengers on a longer drive. It cools as well as you'd want a car this size to, no more.
At 4575 mm long and 1845 mm wide, the CX-5 is a true compact SUV, not a soft-roader pretending to be one. It threads Marina towers and tight multi-storey bays without the breath-holding you get in a seven-seater, and the visibility out front is good for judging a tight bay. The 193 mm of ground clearance is plenty for community speed bumps and steep mall ramps, and the car doesn't scrape on the entrances that catch lower sedans. Don't read that clearance as a desert pass. This is front-wheel drive, so keep it to graded tracks and tarmac. For Hatta passes or real dune work, size up to a proper 4x4.
On the E11 the CX-5 is in its element. The 2.0-litre runs out of shove if you ask for a hard overtake at 120 with four people aboard, but at a steady cruise it's quiet and planted, and it tracks straight enough that long airport runs to DXB or DWC pass without fuss. Real-world economy in Dubai stop-and-go lands near 7 to 8 L/100 km, above the lab figure once the AC is working hard, which is normal here. With the 58-litre tank that's roughly a week of city driving between fills, closer to 800 km if you spend more time cruising than crawling. You'll pay Salik tolls yourself and any RTA fines pass to you, so stay under the cameras on the E11 and keep everyone belted. Children under four need a child seat by law.
Rent the CX-5 if you're one or two adults, or a family of four, who'd rather drive something that handles and feels well-built than something with an extra row you won't use. It's the pick for a Dubai week of commuting, mall runs, and the occasional highway trip, and it's the most car-like SUV at this rental level. Look elsewhere if you genuinely need the space. Five adults with full luggage, or anyone who wants a third row, should size up to a seven-seater like a Kia Sorento or Nissan X-Trail. And if your plan involves dunes or Hatta's rougher tracks, skip the front-wheel-drive crossover entirely and take a real 4x4.
