The Mazda CX-5 2021 is the compact SUV we hand to renters who want a comfortable, sensible week without overpaying, and you can book it from age 18 when most of the market still wants you to be 21. We deliver it across Dubai in one to two hours, and there's a no-deposit option if you'd rather not lock up your card. It's a five-seat SUV that does the ordinary jobs well: the commute, the mall, the airport run, the weekend out of town. Our take is that this is the value pick of the three Mazda SUVs we rent, roomier than a CX-30 and easier on fuel than the CX-50, with a cabin that still feels a step above the budget crowd. If you need a third row or serious off-road ability, it isn't the car.

Running it for a week

This is where the CX-5 makes its case. The 2.0-litre petrol makes 150 hp through a smooth automatic and the front wheels, and at a steady cruise it sips fuel for a car this size. Real-world economy in Dubai stop-and-go lands around 7 to 8 L/100 km, rising a little when the AC is fighting July heat. With the 56-litre tank, that's comfortably a week of city driving between fills, and longer if you spend more time on the highway than crawling through Marina traffic.

It isn't fast. Zero to 100 km/h takes around ten seconds, and a hard overtake at 120 with the car full needs a moment's patience. For commuting and errands, none of that matters. The engine is quiet, the ride is settled, and the whole car feels built to last a hard rental life.

Will your luggage fit

The 442-litre boot is honest for the class. Two large hard cases plus a couple of soft bags go in flat for an airport pickup, with room for a backpack on top. A family of four packing for a week of mall runs is comfortable. Fold the rear bench and you get a long, near-flat floor that takes flat-pack boxes or a bike with the front wheel off.

Where it runs short is people and their stuff at the same time. Load five adults and you're down to carry-ons and shopping, not full check-in suitcases. For that combination, a sedan with a deeper trunk or a seven-seater makes more sense.

Heat and the cabin

Cooling is a genuine rental concern here from May through September, when a parked car bakes within the hour. The CX-5's cabin is on the smaller side for the segment, so the AC has less air to fight. Start it, set it low, and the front vents bring the temperature down to bearable in a couple of minutes and comfortable in about five. There are rear vents at the back of the centre console, which is what you want if you're carrying kids on the school run. It cools as well as you'd ask a car this size to, no more.

Parking, ramps and roads

At 4550 mm long and 1840 mm wide, the CX-5 is a true compact SUV that threads tight multi-storey bays and Marina ramps without the breath-holding you get in a big seven-seater. The 193 mm of ground clearance clears community speed bumps and steep mall entrances without scraping. Don't read that as a desert pass: this is front-wheel drive, so keep it to graded tracks and tarmac. For Hatta or real dune work, take a proper 4x4, or our CX-50 with its standard all-wheel drive.

On the E11 it's quiet and planted at a cruise, and long airport runs to DXB or DWC pass without fuss. Just remember Salik tolls are billed to you, and RTA fines during the rental pass to you as well, so keep your speed sensible and everyone belted. A child under four needs a car seat by law, which we can fit on request.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't
