If you want a small SUV for a Dubai week but don't want to wrestle a big crossover into Marina parking bays, the Mazda CX-30 2023 is the sweet spot, and we'll deliver one to your door in one to two hours. It rents across the city as a five-seat subcompact SUV that drives more like a posh hatchback than a tall box. Our argument here is straightforward: this is the car for one or two people, or a couple with a young child, who want a raised seating position and a genuinely nice cabin without paying for size they'll never use. It's small on the outside, smart on the inside, and easy to live with. Where it falls short is rear-seat and boot room, and we'll be honest about that.

The cabin is the reason to pick it

The CX-30 punches above its rental class inside. The dashboard layout is clean, the materials feel a cut above the usual budget crossover, and the central screen sits high in your eyeline where it belongs. Sit in one after a basic compact and the difference in finish is immediate.

The driving position is the other win. You get the upright, see-over-traffic view people want from an SUV, with a low cowl that makes the car easy to place. For threading Sheikh Zayed Road traffic or judging a tight gap, that visibility counts for more than badge or trim level.

Engine and how it drives

The CX-30 runs a 2.0-litre petrol making 150 hp through an automatic gearbox and the front wheels. It reaches 100 km/h in about 9.8 seconds, which tells you it's relaxed rather than quick. In normal Dubai driving that's fine. It pulls cleanly away from lights and settles into a quiet cruise on the E11.

Ask for a hard overtake at 120 with the car loaded and you'll feel it run short of puff. This is a city and commuter car that handles the occasional airport run, not a highway weapon. Driven at sensible speeds it's smooth, and the gearbox doesn't hunt around the way some rivals do.

Boot space and whether your bags fit

The 430-litre boot is the CX-30's honest limit. Two people with a large case each plus a couple of soft bags is comfortable, and that covers most rentals here. Push past that and it tightens fast. Three or four people with full suitcases from the airport will not fit it all in the back, and you'll end up stacking bags on the rear seat.

Fold the rear bench and the floor opens up to 1406 litres, which is plenty for flat-pack runs or sports kit when you're travelling light on passengers. If you regularly need people and their luggage at the same time, size up to a CX-5. The CX-30 is built for a small load, carried often.

Parking, ramps and the heat

At 4.4 metres long this is one of the easier SUVs to park in Dubai. Tight multi-storey bays, the steep ramps at Marina towers, and busy mall car parks are all undramatic, and the clear visibility means you're not second-guessing the corners. Speed bumps and mall-entrance lips don't trouble it. It is front-wheel drive, so keep it to tarmac and graded tracks; for dunes or Hatta's rougher routes you want a proper 4x4.

Cabin cooling matters from May onward, when a car left in open sun gets brutally hot inside. The CX-30's smaller cabin works in your favour here: there's less air for the AC to fight, so the front vents pull the temperature down to bearable within a couple of minutes and comfortable soon after. Rear passengers get vents at the back of the console, which helps if you're carrying a child on the school run.

What falls to you, and who should rent it

Salik tolls are billed to you as you pass the gantries, and any RTA fines during the rental are yours too, so keep everyone belted and stay under the cameras on the E11. A child under four needs a car seat by law, and we can fit one on request.
