It's a five-seater, and that's the line that decides things. If you're a couple, or one person who mostly drives solo and wants something easy to park around the Marina, the smaller Lexus UX does the same refined job for less car. Size up to the NX when you've got a family, a full boot, or rear passengers who'll be back there for more than ten minutes. Need a third row for six or seven people? The NX won't stretch that far, and you want the RX L or a larger SUV instead.

The refinement case against a German compact SUV

Most renters cross-shopping the NX are also looking at a German compact premium SUV in the same class. They're good cars. The NX wins on three things that actually matter over a rental week.

First, refinement. The cabin is genuinely quiet at speed, road noise stays low on Sheikh Zayed Road, and the ride is calm rather than firm. Second, build quality and reliability. Lexus has a long record here, and a rental that just works, with switchgear that feels solid and nothing rattling, is worth more than a spec sheet. Third, the hybrid. Lexus has been building hybrid SUVs longer than almost anyone, and the NX hybrid is smooth and easy in stop-start traffic.

Where the German rivals pull ahead is outright sportiness. If you want a sharp, hard-edged drive, they're more eager. The NX answers a different question: it's built to be relaxing, and for a week of Dubai driving that's usually the better answer.

Hybrid or petrol, and which to take

The NX comes as a regular petrol turbo or as a hybrid, and the choice is simple. If most of your week is city driving, school runs, mall trips, short hops with traffic in between, take the hybrid. That's exactly where it sips least fuel, and the petrol motor barely wakes up at low speed, which keeps the cabin quiet. If your week is mostly long highway stints to Abu Dhabi or Al Ain, the gap narrows and either version is fine.

All-wheel drive is available across the range. In a city that's flat and paved, you don't need it for grip. It's worth having if you'll see rain or the odd unpaved shoulder, but front-wheel drive covers normal Dubai use without complaint.

Boot and cabin space for a real week

The boot holds enough for a family's luggage with the seats up: two large cases and the soft bags around them, comfortably. Drop the rear seats and it opens up into a long flat load space, which covers a flat-pack run or a weekend's worth of gear. The rear seats are proper adult seats, not token ones, so a teenager or a tall passenger won't be folded up back there.

Up front, the seats are supportive over a long drive, and the air conditioning cools the cabin fast, which is the part that decides a lot of summer rentals here. In July, a car that drops to comfortable in a couple of minutes after sitting in a mall car park is not a small thing.

Where the NX stops: it isn't an off-roader

This matters, so we'll be direct. The NX is not built for the desert. Even with all-wheel drive, the ground clearance and the road-biased tyres mean soft sand and rough wadi tracks aren't its job. It'll handle a graded gravel road or a sandy car park, but point it at the Liwa dunes and you'll get stuck. If a desert trip is on your list, rent a proper body-on-frame 4WD for that part and keep the NX for the tarmac. Treated as the comfortable road SUV it is, it's hard to fault.

Pickup, and getting on the road
