Kia Sportage 2024 - start from 209 AED / day

We hand over the Kia Sportage 2024 anywhere in Dubai with 250 km a day baked into the rental, so a week of school runs, mall trips and the odd highway dash won't have you watching an odometer. This is the current bold-design generation of Kia's compact SUV, the one with the wraparound nose and the long curved screen across the dash, and it rents here as a comfortable five-seat family crossover rather than a trail tool. What follows is who it actually suits for a Dubai week, and where you'd be better off in something bigger or cheaper.

A compact SUV that leads with design and screens

The Sportage looks far more expensive than its class. Sharp creases, the slim boomerang lights up front, a tall stance that reads as a proper SUV from across a car park. Step in and the story carries on: twin displays run together under one pane of glass, one for the driver, one for navigation and media, and the cabin feels a generation ahead of the older Sportage you might have driven before.

For a renter that matters in two ways. The screens make a strange car easy to live with from minute one, with clear navigation for a city you don't know and quick phone mirroring. And the seating position is high and commanding, which most drivers want from an SUV in Dubai traffic. It's a 2.0-litre, front-wheel-drive automatic tuned for comfort, not pace, and that suits the car's job perfectly.

Space inside, and whether your luggage fits

This is where the Sportage earns its keep. The cabin is genuinely roomy for a compact SUV, and rear-seat legroom is good enough that two adults behind two adults isn't a compromise. Three kids across the back on a mall run is no drama either.

The boot holds 543 litres, which in real terms is two large suitcases plus a couple of soft bags, or a full week's groceries for a family of four. A DXB airport run for three or four people with proper luggage works without folding seats. Push toward a fifth passenger and a full set of hard cases and it gets tight, and that's the line where you should be thinking about a Sorento with its third row and bigger hold.

Rear passengers get their own air vents, which is the detail that actually counts in summer here.

Heat, AC and a parked cabin at 45C

A Sportage left in the sun in July gets brutally hot inside, like any car here. The good news is the cabin volume isn't huge, so the AC has a manageable space to cool. Set it to max on the move and the front vents pull the temperature down to comfortable within a few minutes. Those rear vents mean kids in the back aren't left baking while the front seats get all the cold air, which is a real weakness on cheaper crossovers that skip them.

Park in shade where you can and crack the windows for the first thirty seconds of driving to dump the worst of the heat. After that the climate system holds its own through a Dubai afternoon.

Parking, speed bumps and city manoeuvres

At 4.66 metres long the Sportage is a mid-size footprint, bigger than a hatch but still easy to place. The reversing camera and sensors do the heavy lifting in tight Marina and mall bays, and the high seating position gives you good sightlines over speed bumps and out of blind junctions.

Ground clearance is typical SUV, so the steep ramps at older malls and the aggressive community speed bumps don't have you wincing the way a low sedan would. It clears them comfortably at a sensible crawl. Multi-storey bays with tight corners ask for a little care given the width, but nothing a few seconds of patience doesn't solve.

On Sheikh Zayed Road and the airport runs

The 150 hp 2.0-litre is honest about what it is. Around town it's smooth and quiet, exactly what you want for stop-and-go and short hops. Get onto Sheikh Zayed Road or the E11 and it cruises happily at the limit, settled and composed, with enough in reserve for a confident overtake. It's not quick, and it doesn't pretend to be, so if you regularly want to surge past traffic at speed you'll notice the comfort tuning. For airport transfers to DXB or DWC and daily highway commuting, it does the job without fuss.

On fuel, expect around 7 litres per 100 km combined and worse if you sit in heavy traffic with the AC fighting the heat. The 54-litre tank gives a realistic city-and-highway range comfortably past 700 km, so on a normal week most renters fill up once, maybe twice if you're clocking long daily distances.

A quick note on the local rules: Salik tolls on the gates you cross are the renter's responsibility, and any RTA fines during your hire pass to you. Children under four need a child seat by law, which we can fit on request.

Front-wheel drive, and what that rules out

The base Sportage we rent is front-wheel drive. On road that's no handicap at all, and for the vast majority of Dubai driving it's all you'll ever use. But it means this isn't the car for dune tracks or soft sand. If your week includes a serious desert trip or Hatta off-road trails, you want a proper 4x4, not this. For tarmac, malls, school runs and highway cruising, front drive is genuinely all you need.

Who should rent it

Rent the Sportage 2024 if you want a stylish, well-equipped family SUV for a Dubai week of city errands, school runs and highway cruising, and you like the idea of those big screens and a high, comfortable driving position. Two adults, kids and airport luggage all fit, and the rear vents and easy tech make it a relaxed car to live with in the heat.

Size up to a Sorento if you need a third row or you're hauling five people with full luggage. Skip it for a cheaper crossover if you're on a tight budget and don't care about the design and screen kit. And look elsewhere entirely if your trip involves real off-road sand, because this front-drive Sportage is built for the road, and it's very good at it.
