We hand over the Kia Sportage 2024 across Dubai with 250 km a day built into the rate, which is enough road for the school run, a couple of mall trips and a Friday drive to the other side of town without watching the odometer. It's a striking compact SUV with a roomy cabin, a big boot and a screen setup that feels a class above its economy badge. For a family taking a week here, it's one of the easier value calls. The thing to settle before you book is whether five seats and a relaxed 2.0-litre suit your week, or whether you should size up.
This is the bold-faced current Sportage, the one with the boomerang lights and the curved twin-screen dash. Under the hood is a 2.0-litre Smartstream petrol, 156 horsepower, six-speed automatic, front-wheel drive. That's a sensible setup for Dubai rather than a quick one. Around town and up to highway cruising speed it's smooth and quiet. Ask it to overtake two cars at once on Sheikh Zayed Road with the cabin full and it takes a beat to gather itself. You learn to plan the move a little earlier, and after that it's a non-issue.
What sells the cabin is space. Rear legroom is generous for the class, three adults across the back works for shorter hops, and the boot is the headline. At 543 litres it swallows real luggage, not the single-case-plus-handbag compromise you get a segment down.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Class / body | Economy SUV, 5 seats |
| Engine | 2.0L Smartstream petrol |
| Power | 156 hp |
| Transmission | 6-speed automatic |
| Drive | Front-wheel drive |
| Fuel economy | 8.1 L/100 km combined |
| Fuel tank | 54 litres |
| Range | roughly 650 km combined |
| Dimensions (L×W×H) | 4660 × 1865 × 1665 mm |
| Ground clearance | 181 mm |
| Boot | 543 L, up to 1829 L seats down |
Here's where the boot earns its mention. Two large hard cases plus a couple of soft bags fit under the parcel shelf with room to spare, so an airport run for a family of four isn't a Tetris exercise. Drop the rear seats and you've got 1829 litres, which covers a flat-pack pickup or a bicycle. For everyday Dubai life, the weekly grocery haul, a folded pram, a beach cooler and four people all travel together without anything riding on a lap.
The trade-off is honest: it's five seats. Two adults and three kids works for the nursery run and short trips. Two adults, three teenagers and a week of cases starts to feel tight, and a sixth person isn't happening. If that's your group, you want a seven-seater.
In a Dubai July the question that matters is how fast the cabin drops from oven to liveable. The Sportage does fine here. After an hour parked in the sun the front vents pull hard, and the cabin is comfortable within a few minutes of pulling away rather than ten. There are rear vents too, so kids in the back aren't waiting on cold air to drift back from the dash. It's a normal, effective system, not a luxury climate suite, but for the rate it does the job a family needs at 45 degrees.
It's a compact SUV, so it's bigger than a hatch but nowhere near awkward. Multi-storey bays in the Marina and the bigger malls are fine, and the reversing camera with sensors takes the guesswork out of tight slots. The 181 mm of ground clearance clears Dubai's tall speed bumps and steep mall ramps without the scrape you get in a low sedan, and it gives you a useful view over traffic on the highway. This isn't a desert tool, front-wheel drive and a road-biased SUV, so keep it on tarmac and graded tracks rather than soft dune runs.
The 2.0-litre returns around 8.1 L/100 km on a mixed week, more in heavy city crawling, less on a steady highway cruise. With a 54-litre tank that's roughly 650 km between fills, so a normal week of Dubai driving on the included 250 km a day means one fuel stop, maybe two if you're heading out to Hatta and back. Salik tolls and any RTA fines run through the car and come back to you, so the gantries on Sheikh Zayed Road and the airport approaches are on your tab. Standard rules apply: belts on in every seat, and a child seat for under-fours.
Rent the Sportage if you're a family of up to five who wants a comfortable, good-looking SUV with a proper boot and modern kit for an economy-class rate. It's quietly one of the strong value picks for a Dubai week, easy to park, tall enough to feel safe in traffic, and roomy where it counts.
Look elsewhere in two cases. If you're regularly six or seven people, or you've got three teenagers plus airport luggage, size up to a seven-seat SUV and don't fight the space. And if it's just one or two of you doing short city errands, a hatch is cheaper to rent and to fuel, and you won't miss what the Sportage gives you. For the middle ground, a family that wants room without paying for a big seven-seater, this is the one to book.
