Kia Sportage 2023 - start from 185 AED / day

There are two very different Kia Sportage 2023s on offer in Dubai, and renting the right one comes down to the gearbox under the bonnet. We deliver either to your door in one to two hours, with cards, cash, Apple Pay, Google Pay, bank transfer or crypto all accepted at handover. One version pairs a 1.6 turbo with a quick-shifting dual-clutch box, the other a milder 2.0-litre with a conventional automatic. They feel like separate cars to drive, so this page is about which one suits your week, and where the Sportage as a whole earns its place against the rest of the compact-SUV rack.

The turbo or the 2.0: pick by how you drive

The 1.6 turbo is the keen one. It makes 180 hp through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and gets to 100 km/h in about 8.1 seconds, which is genuinely brisk for the class. On Sheikh Zayed Road it overtakes on demand rather than on plan, and the turbo's mid-range means slip-roads and merges never feel like a struggle. The trade-off is the dual-clutch itself: smooth once moving, but it can hesitate for a beat in crawling traffic before it picks a gear. If your week is mostly highway and open running, this is the engine to ask for.

The 2.0-litre is the relaxed alternative. Less power, a touch slower, but its plain six-speed automatic is unbothered by stop-start Marina traffic and just gets on with the job. For the school run, mall trips and city errands it's perfectly enough, and arguably the easier companion in a jam. Neither is a sports SUV. The question is simply whether you value the turbo's punch or the simpler gearbox's calm.

Fuel and how often you'll stop

The 54-litre tank keeps both versions away from the pump for most of a week. Expect roughly 8 to 10 km/L in mixed city and highway use, leaning to the lower end in pure stop-start heat with the AC working flat out. That's good for up to around 720 km on a fill, so a normal week of errands plus a couple of airport runs is one stop, maybe two. The turbo can drink a little harder if you use its performance, but driven gently the two are close. Fuel here is cheap, so the running cost stays low whichever you choose.

Salik tolls run on the account and pass to you as the renter, and RTA fines during the rental are yours, so watch the limits. Seat belts are required in every seat, and a child under four needs a child seat, which the wide rear doors make easy to fit.

Cabin, seats and the family question

Inside, the Sportage is more generous than its compact label implies. Four adults sit comfortably without negotiating knee room, and the back bench is flat enough that three across works for shorter hops, handy when there are kids and a grandparent along. The seating position is high, the dash is modern, and nobody in the car feels short-changed on tech.

It's a five-seater, and that's the honest ceiling. Six or seven people, or three child seats abreast, is the wrong job for this car. Where it does shine is luggage. The boot is among the largest in the class and takes two big cases plus soft bags and a stroller with the seats up, which covers a family DXB run without anyone holding a bag on their lap. Fold the rear seats and the near-flat floor handles a mall haul or a relocation load.

Heat, parking and the roads

The AC pulls its weight, and in a Dubai summer that matters more than any spec line. The cabin seals well, the front vents drop a baking interior down fast, and there are rear vents so children in the back aren't left to cook while the front cools. Climbing in at 45 degrees, that's the difference between a tolerable drive and a grim one.

At 4.66 metres the Sportage is a mid-size footprint. Multi-storey bays, Marina ramps and tight U-turns are all manageable, though it's longer than a hatch and the reversing camera earns its keep in cramped car parks. The 181 mm of clearance on the front-driver clears speed bumps and mall lips cleanly, and the AWD's 210 mm adds margin for a rough track. Both are road SUVs, though. For soft sand and dunes you want a dedicated 4x4.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the 1.6 turbo Sportage 2023 if your week leans on the highway and you want an SUV that overtakes without drama, accepting a slightly fidgety gearbox in heavy traffic. Choose the 2.0-litre if most of your driving is city crawl and you'd rather have the smoother low-speed manners. Either way you get one of the roomiest boots in the class and a comfortable, high-set cabin.

Size up to a seven-seater if you regularly carry six or more. Drop to a hatchback if it's just one or two of you on errands and parking and fuel are your priorities. For a couple or small family who want space and a choice of character, the Sportage 2023 is a sensible week on the road.
