Kia Sportage 2021 - start from 151 AED / day

This Kia Sportage 2021 is the last of the outgoing shape, the one Kia sold across the GCC for years before the sharper, split-headlight redesign took its place in showrooms. Mechanically it's close kin to the Hyundai Tucson from the same generation, sharing a corporate parent, a common platform, and in this case the identical 2.0-litre engine and gearbox pairing. We rent it in Dubai and get it to your door in one to two hours, no counter visit needed. What separates the two badges here isn't how they drive, it's the styling and the cabin layout. This page settles whether the older shape is still worth booking, and where a newer or bigger SUV makes more sense.

The engine, and how it compares to its Hyundai cousin

Under the bonnet is a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre four, sent through a six-speed automatic to the front wheels, rated at around 155 hp and 192 Nm. That's close to what Kia and Hyundai were both getting from this engine family across the two badges at the time, so the Sportage and its Tucson cousin feel nearly identical from the driver's seat: composed through roundabouts, settled at the Sheikh Zayed Road limit, unremarkable off the line. Load it with four adults and a boot of luggage for an airport run and you'll plan your overtakes rather than snatch them, exactly as you would in the Tucson.

The trade-off is a familiar one for a rental car. The naturally aspirated engine runs on regular petrol and skips the turbo lag some smaller downsized engines show off the line around town. What you give up next to the current Sportage is the newer dash and the sharper exterior, not outright pace or economy. The mechanical case for either badge, Kia or Hyundai, comes down to styling and price rather than the spec sheet.

How much boot and back-seat room you actually get

The boot holds 503 litres with the rear seats up, enough for two large cases and a couple of soft bags on a DXB or DWC run without folding anything down. Drop the rear bench and the load floor opens up for flatpack furniture or a full grocery run. That figure sits close to what the newer Sportage and the contemporary Tucson offer too, so nobody is meaningfully short-changed by choosing the older shape.

The back seat fits two adults properly and takes a third only for a short hop between the mall and home. At 4.48 metres long and 1.85 metres wide, it's a touch more compact than the current long-wheelbase Sportage sold in the GCC now, which makes it a little easier to place in a tight Marina tower bay or a cramped basement level in JLT. Ground clearance of around 172 mm shrugs off the sharper speed bumps outside villa compounds and steep mall ramps, though this is a front-wheel-drive car on road tyres. Leave Hatta's tracks and any soft sand for something built for them.

Fuel bills, tolls and keeping the cabin cool

Kia quotes an official combined figure of 7.9 litres per 100 km for this engine, and Dubai's stop-start traffic with the AC working through a hot afternoon pushes real-world consumption closer to 10 or 11. The 62-litre tank is bigger than most cars this size carry, which works in the Sportage's favour: even at the thirstier real-world number, that's a range of roughly 550 to 600 km before the fuel light comes on, so most weeks mean a single stop at the pump. The policy on this car allows 250 km a day, comfortable for ordinary city driving, and anything past that costs AED 0.5 per extra km, gentle enough that a longer run to Al Ain doesn't need much planning. Salik tolls and any RTA fines are the renter's responsibility, standard for the class, and you'll need to be 25 to take the keys, higher than several rivals that hand them over from 21.

The cabin cools quickly for an SUV this size. Front vents pull hard once you're moving, and a Sportage that's been sitting in an open lot at 45 degrees settles to comfortable within a few minutes on the road. Rear vents aren't confirmed across every trim from this generation, so don't assume the back seat gets its own airflow on a longer family trip without checking first. This one comes in silver, which shrugs off Dubai's sun a little better than a dark colour and hides road dust reasonably well between washes.

Who should rent it, and who should look at the newer Sportage

Rent this Sportage 2021 if a proven naturally aspirated engine and a boot that handles real luggage matter more to you than having the newest dashboard in the fleet. It's an easy, unremarkable car for a couple or a small family doing school runs, mall trips and the odd airport pickup, and it drives close enough to its Hyundai cousin that badge preference is really the only thing deciding between them.

Look at the newer Sportage, or the current Tucson, if styling and cabin tech matter more to you, since both moved on to sharper exteriors and screen-heavy dashboards this generation doesn't have. Size down to something like a Seltos or a Picanto if it's just you or a couple on light errands, since the running costs and the age-25 minimum don't buy much extra over a smaller car. Size up, or pick a proper 4x4, if the week includes six passengers or any real off-road driving. This is a five-seat, front-wheel-drive SUV, and no amount of ground clearance changes either of those facts.
