Kia Sorento 2021 - start from 271 AED / day

We hand over the Kia Sorento 2021 across Dubai with free cancellation up to 24 hours before delivery, and the car turns up at your door inside 1 to 2 hours rather than you queuing at a desk. This is the no-drama seven-seater: a 2.5-litre four-cylinder making 191 hp through an 8-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive, built for the school run, the airport pickup and the weekend away. It isn't the V6, and it doesn't try to be. The argument here is simple. For most Dubai families the four-cylinder is the better-value choice, and the only reason to look past it is if you regularly haul a full seven and their luggage up to speed.

Fuel and running cost

Start with the bill, because it's the reason most people pick the four over the six. The 67-litre tank and a real-world city figure around 9 to 10 km/L mean a normal week of city driving needs a single fill, maybe a top-up if you're doing daily runs to DXB with a full car. Range works out to roughly 650 to 710 km depending on how much highway you cover, so a Dubai to Abu Dhabi return on one tank is no stretch. The lighter your right foot and the more open road you do, the closer you get to the top of that figure.

Two costs sit with the renter, not us. Salik tolls are charged each time you pass a gate, and any RTA fines during the rental pass to you, so the speed cameras on the E11 are your responsibility. Seatbelts are mandatory in every seat, including the third row, and children under four need a child seat, which we can fit on request.

How the engine feels on Dubai roads

The 2.5-litre four with 191 hp is the unstressed, sensible end of the seven-seater market. With a couple of people aboard it merges onto Sheikh Zayed Road easily, and the 8-speed auto keeps it quiet and relaxed at a 120 cruise. Pack it with seven and a loaded boot and you'll feel it ask for more on the climbs and the overtakes, so give yourself a clear gap on the Hatta road instead of forcing a quick squeeze past a truck. For the normal mix of errands, the school carpool and an airport run or two, it has exactly what it needs.

All-wheel drive comes standard, which earns its place on a wet ramp in the winter rains or a graded track off the tarmac. Deep soft sand is a job for a proper off-roader, so don't take it dune bashing. For everything a Dubai week actually throws at it, the grip is right.

Will the family and the bags fit?

The honest version: treat it as a comfortable five-plus-two, not a true seven-adult cabin. The first two rows are roomy, with the second wide enough for three kids or for adults to stretch on a long airport run. The third row is for children and short hops. Two kids are content back there, but two adults for an hour to the airport will be folding their knees and asking how far is left.

Luggage follows the same rule. With all three rows up you get a few soft bags and the weekly shop, not a tower of hard cases. Drop the third row, which is how most families run it day to day, and the load space opens up enough for a proper holiday's worth of suitcases. If your trip is seven people and a full set of cases at once, the numbers don't add up and a Palisade is the better call.

Parking and city manoeuvres

At 4801 mm long and 1900 mm wide, the Sorento is a proper midsize SUV, so the tight bays in older Marina towers and some mall basements want a careful line. It isn't unwieldy, and the standard sensors and reversing camera take the stress out of a snug spot, but it's no city hatch you can drop into any gap. The 175 mm of ground clearance clears Dubai's speed bumps and mall ramps without scraping, and the high seat gives you the commanding view that makes lane changes on a six-lane road easy.

Heat, AC, and the parked-cabin problem

Dubai summers sit in the high 40s, and a cabin this size left baking in a car park gets seriously hot inside. The AC has real work to do, so the first few minutes after you climb in are warm while it pulls the heat out. Crack the windows for ten seconds before you set off and it clears quicker. The payoff is rear vents that reach the second and third rows, which is what keeps kids in the back comfortable when the front blower alone never would. Once it's cold, it stays cold even in stop-and-go traffic.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the Sorento 2021 if you want a sensible seven-seater with standard all-wheel drive and a running cost that won't sting, and you're a family of four to six using two rows daily and the third for kids or the school carpool. It's the value pick in its class and it handles the everyday Dubai jobs without complaint.

Step up to the V6 Sorento if you routinely carry a full load and want effortless overtaking up to highway speed. Move to a Palisade if you genuinely need seven adult seats plus a full boot at the same time. And if it's only two of you running errands, a five-seat crossover saves fuel and seats you'll never use. For the family in between, this is the smart, affordable middle.
