If your week in Dubai is mostly tower-block bays, packed mall basements and the school run, the car that fits the day is the one you can park without flinching. That's the case for the Kia Sonet 2025, the smallest crossover Kia makes, which we hand over at your door within an hour or two and rent to drivers from 18. It gives you the higher seat and the view over traffic that people want from an SUV, in a body short enough to slot in where bigger machines give up. This page is about whether that compact size is right for you, or whether you should step up to a Seltos.
At just under four metres long, the Sonet is one of the easiest crossovers to thread into a Marina tower bay or a tight multi-storey corner. The high seating position makes judging the front corners simpler than in a low hatch, and the light steering turns a busy U-turn into a non-event. Where it really earns its keep is the 205 mm of ground clearance. Dubai's speed bumps are tall and the ramps into older buildings can be steep, and the Sonet clears them without the scrape and wince you get in a low car. You're not going off-road in a front-drive crossover, but for kerbs, bumps and the sandy edge of a car park, it has the height to feel unbothered.

The 1.5-litre petrol makes 115 hp through an automatic to the front wheels, and it's a relaxed performer rather than a quick one. Around town it's smooth and easy, exactly what you want for stop-start traffic. On Sheikh Zayed Road it'll sit at 120 without drama, but ask it to overtake across two lanes on the E11 and you'll feel the engine working for it. Plan your moves and it settles into a comfortable cruiser. For city errands and the daily run it has all the pace you need.
The boot holds 385 litres, which is generous for the class and the Sonet's real advantage over a regular hatch. Two adults flying out of DXB for a week get a large case and a cabin bag in with room left over. Push it to a couple plus two kids and a full holiday's worth of bags, and you'll be folding part of the rear seat or stacking soft bags on the back row. For the airport run with two or three people it's comfortable. For a family of five with a week of luggage each, the maths gets tight, and that's the line where we'd point you at the Seltos.
The cooling matters more than any spec when the car has baked in 45-degree sun all afternoon, and the small cabin is the help here. There's less air to chill, so the front vents bring the temperature down quickly once you get moving. Rear passengers get their own vents, worth knowing if you're carrying kids in the back rather than just front-seat commuters. Park in shade where you can, crack the windows for the first thirty seconds to dump the trapped heat, and the start of every trip is far less of an ordeal than it is in a big seven-seater.
With a 45-litre tank and the small petrol engine, a fill covers a long way, and most renters doing the school run, mall trips and the odd airport drop will go most of a week between stops. Heavy city driving, with the AC on hard and stop-start traffic, will pull that down, so treat the range as best-case rather than a promise. Even so, the running cost is low, which is most of the reason to rent at this end of the range.
A few Dubai rules are worth stating plainly. Salik tolls are charged to you each time you pass a gantry, and over a week on a busy route they add up. Any RTA fine from a speed camera or a parking ticket passes to the renter, so drive to the limits. Seat belts are required in every seat, and children under four need a proper child seat, which we can fit on request.
Rent the Sonet 2025 if you're a single driver, a couple, or a small family who wants a higher seat and genuinely easy parking without paying for a bigger SUV. It's the cheapest sensible crossover automatic we keep, it slots into tight bays, and it shrugs off the speed bumps that scrape lower cars. Skip it if you're regularly carrying four or five adults with full luggage, or if you want real overtaking punch on the highway. For either of those, the Seltos gives you the space and the stronger engine and is the smarter spend. For everything most city renters actually do, the Sonet is enough car.
