Some rental weeks don't need a statement car. They need one that starts every morning, slots into any bay and asks nothing extra of the driver. That's the job the Kia Sonet 2024 does in Dubai: a small SUV with raised seating, a smooth automatic gearbox and nothing about it that needs explaining before you pull out of the depot. We get it to your door within one to two hours of booking, which counts for more than a spec sheet when your week already has an agenda. The question this page answers isn't whether the Sonet is exciting. It's whether a dependable, no-surprises small SUV is what your Dubai week actually needs.

The Sonet runs a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four, 115 hp and 144 Nm, paired with Kia's IVT, a CVT-type automatic sending power to the front wheels only. Zero to 100 km/h takes around 12 seconds, so this isn't a car for confident overtakes on Sheikh Zayed Road. Ask for a quick gap and you'll get engine drone before you feel much extra shove. What it does well is the ordinary stuff: the gearbox holds a steady ratio through traffic lights and roundabouts instead of hunting for gears, which is the more common complaint with older CVT-type boxes. That predictability is the whole point of a default car. You climb in, you don't have to think about it, and it does the same thing every time.
Ground clearance sits at 205 mm, tall for a car this size, and it's the number that quietly does the most work day to day. Steep mall ramps, harsh speed bumps and the odd rutted compound entrance don't need the slow crawl a low sedan would demand. That height is for the road, though, not for sand. The Sonet is front-wheel drive on standard tyres, so Hatta's gravel tracks and any dune plan belong to a different car in the fleet.
At 4.11 metres long and 1.79 metres wide, the Sonet is one of the shorter SUVs we rent, and that size is what makes it forgettable to park, in the best sense. Tight Marina and Downtown bays that make a mid-size SUV reverse twice barely register, and a U-turn on a narrower street doesn't need a three-point manoeuvre. The boot holds 392 litres with the rear seats up, enough for one large suitcase and a soft bag, which covers a solo traveller or a couple doing a DXB or DWC run without any negotiation.
Push past that and the class limits show. Two full-size cases plus carry-on start competing for the same space, because this is a subcompact SUV, not a mid-size one. The back seat takes two adults comfortably for a normal trip, or two kids with school bags, but a third adult across the bench for anything longer than a short hop gets tight fast. Fold the rear seats down and the load floor opens up enough for a flatpack box or a grocery run that outgrew the trolley, which is a genuinely useful trick this class of car is good at.
Kia's own combined figure is around 5.9 litres per 100 km, but that's a lab number from a car with the AC off and no traffic. Run it through a Dubai summer with the compressor working and stop-start roads, and expect closer to 7 to 7.5 litres per 100 km in practice. The 45-litre tank still stretches to roughly 550 km of real city range, so a normal week of commuting and errands means one fill-up, maybe two if you're driving in from the outer suburbs daily.
Check the mileage line before you book. This car comes with 250 km included a day, and anything past that costs AED 0.5 per extra kilometre. That covers ordinary city life with room to spare, but a full day out to Hatta and back will chew through the allowance fast, so a rough sum before you leave is worth two minutes. Salik tolls and any RTA fines are the renter's responsibility, the same as every car in the fleet, and child seats are required for under-fours.
The small cabin earns its keep here. Less air inside means the front vents pull a baked interior down to comfortable within a couple of minutes of climbing back in after a few hours in a hot car park. There are no rear vents on this generation, so anyone sitting behind waits a little longer on the worst afternoons. With one or two people aboard and the odd bit of shade, it barely comes up as an issue.
Rent the Sonet 2024 if you want the raised seat and SUV shape without paying for a bigger car, and you'd rather your rental be predictable than impressive. It parks easily, costs little to fuel, and the automatic makes stop-start Dubai traffic genuinely low-effort. A solo resident, a couple splitting errands and mall runs, or anyone who just wants a car that behaves the same way every single day: this is squarely built for that.
Size up if you're regularly carrying four adults and their luggage, or two car seats plus a full boot. A Kia Seltos or Hyundai Creta gives real rear-seat room and a bigger boot for not much more a day. If Hatta or the dunes are anywhere on the plan, skip this one; the front-wheel drive belongs on tarmac. You'll need to be 25 to take the keys, and we can have the car at your door within one to two hours of booking.
