We hand over the Kia Sonet 2024 to your door in Dubai within one to two hours, no need to find a rental counter or wait at a desk. It rents here as one of the cheaper small SUVs that doesn't feel stripped out, which is the whole case for it. You sit high, the screen and kit punch above the price, and it tucks into a parking bay without drama. The question this page settles is simple: the Sonet works beautifully for one driver or a couple who want a tall, well-equipped runabout, but four adults with airport bags will feel the squeeze. Here's where it fits and where you should size up.
This is a subcompact SUV, five seats, front-wheel drive, with a 1.5-litre petrol engine making 115 hp through an automatic gearbox. It's not quick. The 0 to 100 km/h takes 11.8 seconds, which tells you everything about its character: this is a car for getting around, not for winning the merge onto Sheikh Zayed Road.
What you get for the money is the surprise. The Sonet's cabin tech, the touchscreen, the connected features, the general finish, all sit a class above what the rental rate suggests. For a solo driver doing daily errands or a couple on a week's holiday, that combination of high seating and real equipment is the reason to pick it over a plain hatchback.

At just under four metres long, the Sonet is one of the easier cars to live with in Dubai's tighter spots. Multi-storey bays in older Deira buildings, the squeezed ramps under the Marina towers, a quick reverse into a slot outside a mall entrance, none of it asks much of you. The high driving position helps too, since you can see the kerb and judge the nose better than you can in a low hatch.
The 211 mm ground clearance is the quiet bonus here. Dubai's residential speed bumps are taller and meaner than they look, and a low car scrapes its chin on them and on steep mall ramps. The Sonet clears all of that without you holding your breath. You won't be doing dune tracks in a front-wheel-drive car, so don't read the clearance as off-road permission, but for kerbs, ramps and the occasional unpaved car park it's genuinely useful.
Be honest with yourself about the highway. The 1.5 and its automatic are fine around town and perfectly relaxed at a steady 100 to 120 on the E11. Push for a quick overtake at speed, or load it with four people and luggage, and the engine works hard and gets vocal. It pulls, it just takes its time about it.
For city driving, airport runs and the odd trip out to the coast, that's no problem at all. If your week is mostly long highway stints between emirates at speed, or you regularly need brisk overtakes with a full car, a larger compact SUV will feel more comfortable. The Sonet does its best work below highway-cruising stress.
The 45-litre tank is generous for a car this size. On a normal week of Dubai driving, mostly city errands with some highway, you'll get a long stretch between fill-ups, and the petrol 1.5 is reasonably easy on fuel when you're not flogging it. Expect more frequent stops if you sit in summer traffic with the AC fighting the heat all day, since idling in a jam with the compressor running drinks more than the brochure figure suggests. For most renters one fill covers several days of mixed use.
Park anything in Dubai in July and the cabin hits oven temperature. The Sonet's AC is strong for its class and pulls a baked cabin down to comfortable within a few minutes of driving, which is what matters when it's 45 outside. The front vents do the heavy lifting. Rear passengers get less direct airflow than they would in a bigger SUV, so on a long, hot drive with people in the back, give it a head start with the windows cracked for the first minute before you set off.
The 385-litre boot is decent for the segment. It swallows a large suitcase plus a couple of soft bags, or a full week's shopping, without trouble. Two large hard cases and you're playing tetris, and four adults plus their airport luggage is where the Sonet runs out of room.
The rear seats are workable for two adults on shorter hops or for kids, but legroom back there is tight for three grown-ups across. Child seats are required for under-fours under Dubai rules, and an Isofix-mounted seat fits fine, though it eats into rear space. For a family of four heading to DXB or DWC with full cases, a compact SUV or sedan gives you the breathing room the Sonet can't.
Salik tolls run on your account through the gates automatically, and those charges pass to you as the renter, as do any RTA fines from speed or parking cameras. Seat belts are mandatory in every seat. None of this is Sonet-specific, but it's worth knowing before you collect the keys.
Rent the Sonet if you're a solo driver or a couple who want a high-riding, well-kitted small SUV for city life, airport hops and easy parking, without paying for size you won't use. It's one of the smartest-value picks at this end of the market, and the tech and the seating height genuinely lift it above a basic hatch.
Size up to a compact SUV or a sedan if you'll regularly carry four adults with luggage, or if your week is built around fast, loaded highway driving between emirates. And if you only ever drive solo in the city and don't care about the SUV stance, a plain hatchback will cost less and park even easier. For everyone in between, the Sonet is the sensible middle.
