Want a small SUV without small-SUV stinginess on the road? We hand over the Kia Sonet 2024 across Dubai with 250 km a day built into the rate, so a week of errands rarely tips you into extra-kilometre charges. It's an Economy-class subcompact crossover that sits you a little higher than a hatchback, parks like one, and costs about the same to rent. That higher seat and the easy footprint are the whole point. The Sonet is the sensible pick for a solo driver or a couple who want a bit of view and ground clearance without paying for a proper mid-size SUV. Where it gets tight, and who should size up, is what this page sorts out.
Think of it as a tall economy car rather than a real SUV, and you'll be happy with it. One or two people, a daily mix of supermarket runs, Marina errands, the odd run out to a friend's place: that's the Sonet's lane, and it does all of it cheaply.
The raised hip point makes a real difference in traffic. You see over the bonnet of the car ahead, and getting in and out at a mall entrance is easier than in a low hatch. For older drivers or anyone who finds a small car a chore to climb out of, that alone can decide the booking.
What it isn't is a family hauler. Five seatbelts are there, but three adults across the back is a short-trip arrangement, not a comfortable one. Four adults with luggage, or kids plus a buggy and a week of mall hauls, should read the boot section below and then look at sizing up.

Treat the economy figure as a best case. In real Dubai use, with the AC working hard and stop-start traffic, expect to land a bit under 17.5 km/l. Still, a 45-litre tank stretches a long way for city driving.
This is where the Sonet earns its keep. At just under four metres long it slots into the tight Marina bays and older multi-storey car parks where bigger SUVs have to shuffle. The narrow width helps on the same ramps, and most U-turns take one clean swing rather than a three-point fuss.
The 205 mm of ground clearance is genuinely useful day to day. Dubai's residential speed bumps can be aggressive, and the Sonet clears them without the scrape you get in a low sedan. It rides up steep mall ramps and over kerbs without trouble. This is clearance for comfort, not for dunes. The Sonet is front-wheel drive only, so soft sand and proper off-road are off the table. Keep it on tarmac and graded tracks.
In town the 115 hp engine is fine. It pulls away from lights without drama and keeps up with the flow. The automatic is smooth at city speeds and far less tiring than a manual in Dubai's stop-and-go crawl, which is reason enough to take it.
Be honest about the highway, though. With 0 to 100 km/h in 11.8 seconds, the Sonet builds speed steadily rather than quickly. At a cruise of 100 to 120 on the E11 it's settled and stable, but an overtake needs planning and a firmer push on the pedal, especially with three or four aboard. It does the job, just without much in reserve. For short DXB or DWC airport hops with one or two people and cabin bags, it's well suited. For a daily commute where you're always overtaking, you'll want more punch.
The boot holds 385 litres, decent for the class but not limitless. Plan on one large suitcase plus a soft cabin bag, or two medium cases, in the boot proper. That covers a couple's week or a solo traveller with room to spare.
Push past that and you're folding the rear seats. Two big hard cases plus carry-ons means dropping at least half the back bench, so a full back seat and a full luggage load don't go together. For four people each with a checked bag, the Sonet won't swallow it. That's the clearest signal to step up to a Creta or a similar mid-size SUV.
Park anything in a July afternoon and the cabin hits oven temperatures. The Sonet's advantage is its size: a small cabin cools quickly once you're moving, and the front vents pull the worst of the heat out within a few minutes. Crack the windows for the first few seconds to dump the hot air, then let the AC catch up. Rear passengers rely mostly on airflow from the front, which is fine for short trips with people in the back.
A couple of Dubai notes worth stating plainly. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental pass to you as the renter, so watch the gantries and the speed limits. Seatbelts are required in every seat. None of it is unusual, and the Sonet's thrifty fuel use keeps the rest of the week cheap.
Rent the Kia Sonet 2024 if you're one or two people who want a higher driving position, easy parking, and a cheap, no-fuss week of city driving with clearance for Dubai's speed bumps and ramps. For that brief it's one of the best-value small SUVs we hand over, and the included 250 km a day means most renters never think about mileage.
Don't rent it expecting space or highway muscle it doesn't have. Four adults with airport luggage, a family needing the full back seat and a loaded boot, or anyone facing a daily overtaking commute should size up to a Creta. Match the Sonet to its job and it's hard to beat on cost. Ask it to be a bigger car and it'll let you down.
