The engine, and how it drives

Around town, where a rental actually spends most of its time, the IVT is smooth and forgiving in stop-start traffic, holding steady rather than hunting for a gear the way older CVTs used to. Push it hard on a slip road and you'll hear the engine drone before you feel much extra shove, which is the honest trade for a car this size and price.

Ground clearance is the genuine strong point at 205 mm, taller than most rivals in the class, including its Hyundai Venue platform-mate. Mall ramps, speed bumps and the odd unpaved compound entrance don't need a slow crawl the way they do in a lower hatchback. It's still front-wheel drive on road tyres, though, not a car for Hatta trails or soft sand, whatever the tall stance suggests from the driver's seat.

Boot, back seat and the daily load

At 4.11 metres long and 1.79 metres wide, the Sonet is genuinely small, the shortest SUV we rent, and it shows in how it parks. Tight multi-storey bays in Downtown or the Marina that make a mid-size SUV reverse twice barely register here, and U-turns on narrower roads don't ask for a three-point manoeuvre. The boot holds 392 litres, enough for one large suitcase and a soft bag with the rear seats up, which covers a solo traveller or a couple on a DXB or DWC run comfortably.

Push for two large cases plus hand luggage and you'll be negotiating space, because this is a subcompact class, not a mid-size one. The back seat fits two adults for a normal trip, or two kids and their bags, without complaint, but a third adult across the bench or a fourth passenger's case stacked on top is where the Sonet runs out of room. Fold the rear seats down and there's a reasonably flat load floor for a flatpack box or a bike, useful if the week is about moving things rather than sightseeing.

Running cost, heat and the cabin

Kia claims combined economy of about 5.9 litres per 100 km on the 1.5-litre engine, but that's a lab figure. In Dubai's stop-start traffic with the AC working through summer, expect closer to 7 to 7.5 litres per 100 km. The 45-litre tank is on the small side for the class, giving roughly 550 km of real city range, so budget for a fill-up mid-week if you're driving it daily rather than leaving it parked most days.

Mileage is worth checking before you book. The daily allowance on this car is 250 km, which covers ordinary city driving and errands without trouble, and anything past that costs AED 0.5 per extra kilometre. A full day out to Hatta and back will eat into that allowance, so it's worth keeping an eye on the odometer on a longer trip. Salik tolls and any RTA fines are the renter's responsibility, standard across the fleet.

The small cabin has one real upside in summer: it cools fast. Climb back in after a few hours in the sun and the front vents pull the temperature down within a couple of minutes, quicker than a bigger SUV has to manage. There are no rear vents on this generation, so back-seat passengers wait a little longer on the hottest afternoons, worth knowing if you've got kids riding back there for most of the trip.

Who should rent it, and who should size up

Rent the Sonet 2023 if you're one or two people who want SUV height and easy parking at the cheapest end of Kia's Dubai SUV range, and you're not chasing highway pace or a full boot every day. It's an easy, small car to drive around town, cheap to fuel, and it fits into spaces a bigger SUV has to think twice about.

Size up if you're regularly two adults with two kids and a full boot, or you need four adults with luggage for an airport run. A Kia Seltos or Hyundai Creta gives you a genuinely bigger back seat and boot for not much more money. If dunes or Hatta trails are on the plan, this front-wheel-drive car isn't built for it. For a solo trip, a couple's week of mall runs and errands, or a light budget booking where every dirham matters, the Sonet does the job without asking you to pay for space you won't use.
