Two SUVs, one platform, and a debate our desk has most days: whether the Hyundai Creta or the Kia Seltos 2024 is the smarter rental. They share an engine, a gearbox and a chassis, so the difference isn't going to show up as a number on a spec sheet. It shows up in the cabin, the throttle response, and which one drivers ask for by name. We get the Seltos to your door within one to two hours, and this page works out where that difference actually sits, starting with what's under the bonnet.

One engine, two badges: how the Seltos drives

Strip away the styling and the Seltos and the Creta are the same mechanical package: a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated four making 123 hp and 151 Nm, through a genuine six-speed torque-converter automatic rather than the CVT a lot of this segment leans on. That gearbox is the detail worth knowing before the badge. It shifts through actual gears instead of droning as the revs climb, so both cars feel like a normal automatic in Dubai's stop-start traffic rather than a rubber-band one.

Where the Kia edges ahead is harder to put a number on. The throttle tip-in feels a shade sharper off the line, and the cabin has a more deliberate layout, dials and buttons placed where a driver's hand actually falls rather than buried in a menu. Neither car is quick. Kia quotes 0 to 100 km/h in around 12 seconds, and merging hard onto Sheikh Zayed Road or overtaking with the car loaded still means picking your gap rather than assuming the power is there. Settle it at 120 on the highway and it holds that speed without fuss, which is what most of a Dubai week actually asks of it.

What the boot and back seat actually hold

At 433 litres the boot takes two large suitcases and a soft bag with the rear seats up, enough for a DXB or DWC run without a case ending up on someone's lap. Fold the bench and the floor opens out for flatpack furniture or a bike, a genuine advantage over the hatchbacks competing for the same rental budget. The Creta's boot lands within a few litres of this figure, so cargo space alone won't decide between the two.

The back seat takes two adults comfortably on a normal trip, or two kids across for the school run. Add a fourth adult and a full boot for a long airport transfer and knees start meeting seatbacks, the honest limit of a compact SUV rather than a flaw specific to this car. At 4,315 mm long and 1,800 mm wide it still drops into tight tower bays and mall multi-storey spaces without the shuffle a full-size SUV needs, and the 190 mm of ground clearance clears Dubai's taller speed bumps and steeper ramps cleanly. Don't read that clearance as a desert invitation. This is front-wheel drive on road tyres, and it stays on the tarmac.

Running costs, and keeping the cabin livable in July

The 50-litre tank is generous for the class. Expect close to 8 litres per 100 km in real Dubai driving, stop-start with the AC working hard, which puts a full tank near 600 km. For a normal week of commuting and errands that's usually one stop at the pump.

Mileage is worth reading before you book. The daily allowance on this car is 250 km, comfortable for city life, and it runs to AED 0.5 per kilometre once you go past it. A day trip out to Hatta and back will chew into that allowance, so glance at the odometer before a longer outing. Salik tolls and any RTA fines are the renter's responsibility, as with every car in the fleet, and you'll need to be 25 to take the keys on this one.

Cabin cooling is a genuine concern here, not a footnote. It's a mid-size cabin, so there's more air to shift than in a small hatch, but the front vents pull hard and bring a baked interior down to something bearable within a few minutes of climbing back in on a 45-degree afternoon. Park in shade where you can and it barely comes up as an issue across a week.

Which one to actually book: Seltos, Creta or something else

If you're cross-shopping the Kia against the Creta on badge alone, book the Seltos. The mechanicals are close enough to call a draw, but the cabin feels more finished and the driving character has a touch more life to it, which is the part you notice every day rather than once at the spec sheet. One or two people or a small family doing commuting, malls and the odd airport run get real value here without paying full-size SUV money.

Size up if you're regularly carrying four adults with a full boot of luggage, where a mid-size sedan or a seven-seater rides easier. Want more shove for overtaking, the turbocharged Geely Coolray has the pace advantage over both the Seltos and the Creta. Chasing the lowest possible rate above everything else, the MG ZS undercuts this segment, though you give up some of the Kia's polish to save that money. And if the plan involves any real off-roading, this stays a front-wheel-drive crossover, not a 4x4, so look elsewhere.
