The latest Kia Seltos lands in the sweet spot between a tall hatch and a proper SUV, and we rent the freshened 2024 version with its sharper face and updated cabin tech across Dubai. We bring the Kia Seltos 2024 to your door, and the daily rate includes 250 km, which is more headroom than most rentals in this class give you. So the real question this page settles is simple: is this the car that does the school run and the airport pickup all week, then still copes with a weekend drive to the east coast without feeling out of its depth? For most renters wanting one car that does everything, it is, and below is where it shines and where it doesn't.
The pitch for a compact crossover is space and height without the bulk and cost of a mid-size SUV, and the Seltos delivers on that. You sit higher than in a Rio or a Picanto, which makes a difference in Dubai traffic where you want to see over the next car on Sheikh Zayed Road. The cabin feels open for the segment, the front seats are genuinely comfortable on a long stint, and the 2024 update brought a cleaner dashboard and a bigger screen that pairs with your phone without fuss.
What you get over a hatchback is real: a 433-litre boot, taller seating, and 190 mm of ground clearance that shrugs off the speed bumps and steep mall ramps that scrape lower cars. What you don't get is a third row or genuine off-road hardware. This is a front-wheel-drive crossover, not a dune machine. For tarmac, graded desert-camp tracks, and the occasional gravel turn-off, it's fine. For soft sand, it isn't, and no amount of clearance changes that.

The numbers that matter for a rental week are the tank and the clearance, and I'll get to both. The engine line needs a word first.
You're renting the 1.6-litre petrol with 123 hp and an automatic gearbox driving the front wheels. That's the sensible, economical Seltos, not the hot turbo version sold in some markets. Around town and at airport-run speeds it's smooth and quiet, and it never feels short of pull for daily use. Push it hard for a steep overtake on the E11 with a full car and you'll notice it working, because 123 hp is moving a fair-sized body. It gets there, just without drama.
If you want effortless highway punch, the Seltos turbo or a larger SUV is the answer. For the way most people actually drive in Dubai, which is city errands plus the odd longer run, this engine is the right call and the cheaper one to fuel.
Kia quotes about 6.9 L/100km, and in real Dubai conditions, with the AC fighting 45-degree heat and stop-start traffic on Al Khail, expect closer to 8 or 9. That's still reasonable. The 50-litre tank means a comfortable 550 to 600 km of mixed driving between fills, so a normal week of commuting and mall trips is one fuel stop, maybe two if you add a coast run.
Two Dubai costs sit outside the fuel: Salik tolls and any RTA fines both pass to you, the renter, so plan your gates and watch the average-speed cameras on the long highways. Seat belts are required in every seat, and a child seat is mandatory for under-fours.
This is the test that decides a Dubai rental, and the Seltos passes it well. The AC is strong and pulls a parked, sun-soaked cabin down quickly, noticeably faster than the small economy cars we hand out, partly because the vents move good air and partly because the cabin isn't huge. Rear passengers get their own air vents at the back of the centre console, which matters if you're carrying kids or adults in the back through July and August. Park in shade where you can, but you won't be sweating through the first ten minutes the way you might in a stripped-out budget hatch.
At 4,385 mm long it's bigger than a hatch but still easy to place. It slots into standard mall and Marina bays without the nervous shuffling a full-size SUV demands, the steering is light at parking speed, and the higher seating helps you judge the corners. The 190 mm of clearance is the quiet hero here: the community speed bumps and the sharp ramp lips that bottom out low cars are a non-event in the Seltos.
Rear legroom is the one honest caveat. It's good for two adults and fine for three kids, but with a tall driver up front, a tall adult behind can find knee room tight on a long trip. For four adults and a week of airport luggage, you can do it, though a mid-size sedan or larger SUV will be more relaxed.
Rent the Seltos if you want one comfortable, well-equipped vehicle for a Dubai week that mixes city driving, airport runs, and a weekend trip. It's roomier and more capable than an economy hatch, easier to park and cheaper to run than a big SUV, and the strong AC and rear vents earn their keep in summer. Couples, small families, and anyone who values a higher view of the road are the natural fit.
Look elsewhere in two cases. If you're regularly carrying four full-size adults plus luggage, size up to a larger SUV or a sedan with a deeper boot. If your trip is purely short city hops for one or two people, a smaller automatic will cost you less to rent and fuel. For everyone in between, the 2024 Seltos is the easy, sensible pick.
